Robert K. Massie was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and studied American history at Yale and European history at Oxford, which he attended as a Rhodes Scholar. He was president of the Authors Guild from 1987 to 1991. I received this pre-published edition of Robert Massie's Catherine the Great as part of the Early Reviewers program of Library Thing. I received the biography free of charge in exchange for this review.I had high hopes for this work based upon my experience with two of Massie's previous works, Peter the Great and Dreadnought, both of which I found outstanding. Quite some time ago, I read a previous biography of Catherine the Great written by Henri Troyat and found her life story to be fascinating. Having said that, I must say I was somewhat disappointed with this biography.Perhaps my disappointment stems from excessive expectations, but in any event I found it failed to measure up to Massie's earlier work. When compared to the Troyat biography, while I found this work to be more approachable and reader friendly, it was lacking in the more detailed and deeper analysis provided by Troyat. By no means is this a poor effort, but the subject matter is about as rich as it comes and I found Massie's result to be somewhat pedestrian and simple. All the bases are covered from a factual standpoint, but the book is quite weak when it comes to any kind of analysis. The history is set out in a series of short, choppy chapters (over seventy chapters, each of which is broken into further subsections) that do little more than take the reader from event to event in the life of Catherine, one of the most intriguing lives of the period.Massie is a fine biographer and historian. I can't help but feel that with subject matter this rich, he could have done far better.

One of the BEST biographies I have EVER read. The maps were very useful. The entire story read like a novel but was still filled with essential & interesting facts. It was sad to read that Catherine repeated many of the same mistakes (which she swore she never would) that Elizabeth I committed concerning her immediate family when Catherine was under her tutelage. I especially liked the idea of short chapters with breaks within those chapters. So much easier to read than the usual "History Book" with a zillion pages, too many facts & footnotes, & ponderous prose. A welcome change. Would give it TEN stars! Massie's other books are very similar: informative, well-written, but eminently readable.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Russian History, so I’m not in a position to judge Robert K. Massie’s Catherine the Great: Portrait of a Woman on accuracy, but I read and thoroughly enjoyed his books on the World War I naval war, so I have no reason to doubt his accuracy when it comes to Catherine the Great. So much of what you see about Catherine the Great is about her sexuality, so it was wonderful to read about her ideas and how and why they changed throughout her reign and about her accomplishments. She’s such a fascinating subject and Massie did a great job describing what developed and formed her personality and how her experiences changed her thoughts from childhood to Empress then over her reign as Empress. Since Catherine was a Western European taking an Eastern European throne, Massie does a great job showing how it disadvantaged her and how she overcame her subject’s suspicions. He also does a wonderful job fitting in the complicated relationship between Russia and the rest of Europe and how the two influenced each other. If you’re a fan of History or Biography, this is definitely a book to put on your reading list.

Massie has written several books about the rulers of Russia including Nicholas, Peter the Great, and now Catherine the Great. I've thoroughly enjoyed each one, learning about extremely interesting and historically important figures. Catherine led a semi tragic life before she became the empress of Russia. Married to an immature prince from Germany, who had no plans of embracing Russia, including it's language, religion, army, or culture. Unlike Catherine, who also came from Germany, but strove to learn the language, convert to the Russian Orthodox, church, and made an effort to get to know whatever Russians she was allowed to have contact. Her personal life was a lot racier than one would expect from someone in her position, but given her personal history, understandable.

Ender's Game is a classic. It's a to read book. Orson Scott Card creates a believable world and a wonderful hero. I think this book is a good read for all ages. It's a book you can read over and over again and still get something from it. It's thoughtul and deep and is a great read for teen boys too.

For me, the most interesting books involve strong, well-developed characters. Ender’s Game is a 5 Star book because of Ender Wiggin; a complex and compelling boy whom the reader can’t help but empathize with and cheer for throughout the read.Does this book really need another review? Probably not. Clearly, Ender’s Game is the mark of an excellent sci-fi read, so a lot of people probably agree with my assessment of Card’s work. But let me just say, any book that has aliens (check), really really ridiculously smart children (check), a fast-paced and interesting plot line (check), action and battle and war! (check), and beautiful writing (check), should be read.

I got this book when I saw a trailer for the movie. I was so intrigued by the trailer, I felt I needed to read the book. And I am so glad I did. There was so much they had to cut from the book to make the movie. Plus, getting to be in Ender’s head was pretty cool.Basic premise of the book: future dystopian world undergoing population control. The world has been attacked by aliens and humans were so scared, they decided to track down and wipe the aliens out. But they realized adult reflexes were too slow and their decisions weren’t ruthless enough. So they created a battle school to find the smartest, most ruthless and most strategic of kids, and so they found Ender. To train him, they used games simulating battles they were actually having in space and they were amazed at the choices he made. Through video games, they were able to make Ender into a perfect military leader.I won’t tell any more than that because I don’t want to spoil the book. But if you find yourself thinking “why is this kid so freaking important to these battle school leaders”, at least you will understand going in. Definitely read it. I’ve read it twice now and it still amazes me.

When I was in ninth grade, we were taken to the library and told to choose a book so we'd have something to read between standardized tests. Instead of picking a book, I started screwing around in the library. Generally getting into trouble. Typical teen stuff.The librarian eventually nabbed me, and asked what sort of books I liked reading. For some reason that I still can't explain to this day, I thought that all the "cool" kids read science fiction. So that's what I said."Then you should read this book," she told me, handing me a fairly worn copy of 'Ender's Game,' and telling me that she loved it enough to re-read it every year.I wasn't thrilled with it, to be honest. The cover seemed kind of hokey. It smelled funny (hey, I was a kid). I had no idea what a "Hugo" or "Nebula" award might be. But the bell was ringing, testing would begin shortly, and I was kind of stuck for options. I checked out the book, and went on my way.I've always been a fast test taker, and so about an hour into a three-hour test I was done and bored. I opened the book and started reading. And a two hours later I was done.Up to that point, I'd read tons of books—mostly of the "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" and "Encyclopedia Brown" variety. This was the first "grownup" fiction I'd ever read. And I was hooked. I went on to read everything I could find by Orson Scott Card. I wrote tons of short stories as creative writing assignments, all featuring Battle School or Ender himself. And I took what was a sorta-hobby of writing short stories and "books" (very short books, I assure you) and ended up turning it into a lifelong pursuit.And, like the librarian, I've taken to re-reading this book every year. I've given away more copies of this single book than I can count. And I've owned every English-language version of it ever released. It's a benchmark, life-shaping book for me.'Ender's Game' was the book that taught me that books could be what you do for a living. And for that, I'm incredibly grateful. My only regret is that I can't give it more than five stars.

I am unhappy with this product. I ordered this hardcover, thinking it was a novel. This isn't a novel, it is a graphic novel. Nowhere in the listing on Amazon does it indicate that.

One of my favorite books. I have read this several times over the last 15 years and enjoy it each time. It is a sci-fi story that very much reads like a "Harry Potter" coming of age story so I am sure Potter heads will love it too. There is a twist at the end I NEVER saw coming when I first read it in High School. I even named my cat Ender Wiggins to honor my favorite book character.Yes, there is a movie, and if you never read the book you will enjoy it but to be honest I enjoyed the movie more having read the book. That is rare, but it gave great visuals for what was hard to imagine in the book.Note: If you read and enjoy this book, check out Ender's Shadow. It is a parallel novel about the character Bean and is every bit of exciting.

Jane Sales, Lead Author Jane joined Symbian (then Psion) in 1995 to lad the team whose goal was to create a new 32-bit operating system, now known as EKA1. This goal was realized two years later, when the Psion Series 5 was released. Since then, Jane has taken on variety of roles within Symbian, Including product management, systems architecture and setting up a small product -focused research group in Japan. Jane Studied at Jesus college, Oxford, where she gained an NA in mathematics in 1982. After that, she became part of a small team building a microcomputer to which they ported CCPIM, It was he start of a long-lasting love of systems programming. In 2003, Jane Moved to the South of France and Began work on this book She would like to thank her husband, Roger, for his moral and financial support over the Succeeding 18 months. Corinne Dive-Reclus Corinne joined Symbian in 2001 after several years at Baltimore Ltd, where she designed the embedded software of ACCE ( Advanced Configurable Crypto Environment), a cryptographic hardware module certified FIPS 140-1 Level 4. In 1987, her first job was as a presales engineer at Sun Microsystems France where she was exposed to the concept of Network Computing & Internet and to its very first remote attacks - at a time when this was still confidential. Being more interested in development than presales, she subsequently worked as a software engineer for Concepts and Implicit, developing an RAD )Rapid Application Development) Programming Language for the creation of distributed data-oriented applications. Since joining Symbian, Corinne has been the Platform Security System Architect, and has worked on the platform security architecture from its initial design to its implementation in Symbain V9. To ensure that all layers of the operating system will contribute to its overall security, she worked extensively with Andrew Thoelke and Dennis May to validate the security features of EKA2, design new services such as Publish & Subscribe and Capability Model, as well as defining the new behavior of the file server, known as Data Caging. For this work, Corinne received the Symbian Technical Innovation award in 2003. as an 86 year old happily practicing catholic, I suddenly realized years ago I had no knowledge of the old testament. I felt the new testament revoked the old testament. I repeat little did I know.mr. Limbaugh constructed this book magnificently. I see clearly that the material he provides undoubtedly links the old testament with jesus.I will reveal none of what I read. maybe the material is difficult for an 86 year old to retain ,but everything I needed to know has been confirmed.those of you not inclined to spiritual reading, give this a try. but say a silent prayer before each reading session.

I wish I had waiting to order this until I'd listened to the first audiobook I bought by this author. His work is excellent; very interesting and extremely well researched, but the massive scripture references he lists are lost to the listener unless s/he is able to jot them down (very quickly!). Had I "read" either book I bought in audio format, I would have purchased any other by Mr. Limbaugh in a paper edition or Kindle.

Concise and understandable review of the Christ-centered redemption story in both the Old and New Testament. One God, one supernaturally-revealed, unified account of His provision for us. All roads point to the one glorious Truth.

AFTER reading through several dozen pages I'm impressed with this book. The Emmaus Road encounter is familiar to me because of a group study through my church in 1998 on the subject. Recently I have been making my own study through the Old Testament seeking new insight by the power of the Holy Spirit into the Emmaus Road encounter. Looking forward to finishing it and comparing my own notes to what Limbaugh has written.

The book is written in a very readable style that would be useful to the average person. It is not for theologically trained readers only. Even so, I find it to be a very thorough review of Old Testament content and it's relationship to the New Testament Scriptures, and the Messiah that was pointed to in Old Testament times and fulfilled by Jesus in New testament times. The theology is Calvinist, which focuses first on the sovereignty of God, but the grace of God accessed by God-given faith also comes out in the discussions. I am an emeritus Lutheran Pastor, still actively serving a small congregation. I plan to order a hard-back version in addition to the Kindle version I am reading. The hard-back version will serve as a good reference book to those Old testament connections to the New Testament, and as such will be useful in Bible classes.

What a great way to assimilate the God-Man found in the Jewish scriptures! No wonder two thirds of the Bible is often neglected by mainstream Christianity--He's in there, loud and clear, but we have to want to look for Him. David Limbaugh's unabashed, matter-of-fact style of handling the most important truth is eye-opening, inspiring, and baiting. What if every pastor read this and took it seriously? Christianity would morph into what it SHOULD be--personal Jesus, His hand holding ours, His effervescence bubbling up His people, energizing this "last" generation. "Last?" It's in there. Thanks, Mr. Limbaugh; your private study which only Jesus saw erupts in this book, creating a tidal wave of minds and hearts.

About the Author

Maurice Merleau-Ponty was born in 1908 in Rochefort-sur-Mer, France. Drawn to philosophy from a young age, Merleau-Ponty would go on to study alongside Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Simone Weil at the famous École Normale Supérieure. He completed a Docteur ès lettres based on two dissertations, La structure du comportement (1942) and Phénoménologie de la perception (1945). After a brief post at the University of Lyon, Merleau-Ponty returned to Paris in 1949 when he was awarded the Chair of Psychology and Pedagogy at the Sorbonne. In 1952 he became the youngest philosopher ever appointed to the prestigious Chair of Philosophy at the Collège de France. He died suddenly of a stroke in 1961 aged fifty-three, at the height of his career. He is buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

I am not a man or a consciousness, but the absolute source. My existence moves out and sustains my physical and social surroundings. I am in and toward the world and it is in the world that I know myself. I know about dreams and reality because I have an experience of the difference, so my problem is to make explicit my primordial knowledge of the "real, " the perception of the world as our idea of the truth. The world is what we perceive.Beauty: Kant demonstrated there is a unity of the imagination and the understanding, a unity of subjects prior to the object. As in beauty there is harmony between the sensible and the concept, between myself and another. The hidden art of the imagination gives rise to discovering of oneself and appreciating oneself, not just as the aesthetic which grounds the unity of consciousness, but also as knowledge.With true/radical reflection: we step back from the world (not withdraw from it) in order to see transcendences, revealing the world's strangeness and paradoxes.Intellectualism is unaware of the problem of others, the world ( they have no "thisness"). The old Cogito devalues the perception of others and of the world. Unless I find myself situated in the world, I can not find others (inter-subjectivity) or the world. Intellectualism breaks with the world by a constituting consciousness rather than by being grasped directly.Empiricism presents the absolute belief in the world as the totality of spatio-temporal events, and treats consciousness as a region of that world. Intellectualism and empricism are "naturalistic" positions which hide true perception.All signification of language is measured by the experience we have of ourselves and this consciousness that we are. Consciousness is the actual presence of myself to myself prior to words, concepts and thematizations. Operative intentionality (qua Husserl) establishes the natural and pre-predicative unity of the world and of our life as seen in our desires, evaluations and landscape. It is the text prior to precise language. Because we are in the world, we are condemned to sense, and to acquire a name in history.The analytic/empirical is the figure upon which the background of the phenomenal lies. Figure and background are thus the structures of consciousness, irreducible to qualities of consciousness.There is a misconception of judgment as perception when it loses its constituting function and becomes an explanatory principle, position taking, knowing for me across all moments. False judgment reduces sensing to appearance, denying evidence of phenomena everywhere. To perceive is not to judge but to grasp a sense immanent in the sensible. Judgment is only true if it follows spontaneous organization and the particular configuration of the phenomena."I am a consciousness, a singular being who resides nowhere and can make itself present everywhere through intention. Everything that exists, exists as either thing or as consciousness, and there is no in between. The thing is in a place, but perception is nowhere, for if it were situated it could not make other things exist for itself." (p. 39, 2012)

The text of this edition of Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception in English translation is completely corrupt. It is unreadable. Obviously someone has done a quickie job of OCR without going back to correct his or her work. Here is an example: "Kant showed, in the Rfjhtjjlioi of Jdeof''!' ^. thaLinner perception isjmpossible witHbut ^ uter perception," Unless you enjoy seeing your money vanish with nothing to show for it, do not buy this Kindle book.

It is multidisciplinary and the best book so far that explains human condition in an adventurous and realistic fashion. To comprehend its themes and theses is surely very daunting, but it opens new horizons before you and makes your life and living very very interesting. You will learn that your life is ambiguous and contingent and that you are both *a pure consciousness* "who makes [or creates] others and the world (things, objects) exist for [you] and *a body* with "a psychological and historical structure". You are everything that you see and you have this means of escape. In other words, you are absolutely free (because you are a pure consciousness) despite the fact that you have a vulnerable and an aging body through which you are also part and parcel of this world. And you journey in this world towards your death. In brief, in the words of Simone de Beauvoir, Phenomenology of Perception by Maurice Merleau-Ponty is not only a remarkable specialist work but a book that is of interest to the whole of man and to every man; the human condition is at stake in this book."

Obviously, Merleau-Ponty had significant things to say. I can see how his insights influenced Gestalt psychology and cognitive-behavioral treatment. But it is difficult to understand. It takes a sober commitment.

Updated:Merlue-Ponty's magnum opus-- The Phenomenology-- is verbose, esoteric, and seemingly incomprehensible. But, (and that is a LARGE but) do not let this deter you! This work is, in my opinion, an ESSENTIAL read for any person who considers themselves a philosopher! To consider it anything less than canon would be a metaphorical spit in the face to Plato, Descartes, and Kant themselves.Merlue-Ponty's work is an attempt to reshape the philosophical world presented by his predecessors. Starting from the subjective space, Merlue-Ponty begins with a rather escoteric goal, to define human understanding. With this in mind, MP is tasked for solve, for what he argues intellectualism (Kant) and empiricism cannot due justice to-- an accurate account of human experience. Here then, Merlue-Ponty, working to move past Intellectualism and Empiricism the like, takes radical terms to rightly situate our understanding back within ourselves (and out of the objective space!).

The text of this edition is worthless, and it only furthers the notion by mendacious critics that philosophy is nothing more than a fuzzy discipline. Literally fuzzy. To the extent that reading the text of this edition will conjure up a wave of “classic” migraines that only a cyclops could endure.

Great edition of a fantastic text. The slightly larger font makes the text soooo much easier to get through, don't be intimidated by the length! Additionally this is a fantastic translation.

An important (complex) read that really showcases this philosopher's work. A major text that should be enjoyed in small pieces.
