Even though this book is nearly 35 years old, it is still relevant to the current world situation. The details in this books are applicable to all current world events. Recommended for anyone looking at the foreign politics of the US.

A bit convoluted but extremely informative. Great read.

Chomsky is good. The book and information is telling. However, the book is old and the information is history.

This is a reissue of a thirty year old book. It is an excellent books but has a historical reference.

product was as described.

In '75, Gerald Ford allowed and facilitated one of the worst genocides in the history of the world to take place when Indonesia invaded East Timor. Noam Chomsky and Ed Herman detailed it at length in this book published in 1979. Theirs was a voice in the wilderness as the contemporary U.S. media totally ignored the circumstances and the carnage. It was not until 2001 that Chomsky and Herman were once again shown to be spot on when documents in the national archives were declassified. Here's a good site that covers those latter disclosures as below: [...]* When Suharto told Ford and (1973 Nobel Peace Prizewiner Henry) Kissinger that he was about to order an invasion, the response was only to caution that "it would be better it were done after we returned" (the invasion began the next day).* Kissinger told Suharto that the use of U.S.-supplied arms in the invasion-equipment that under U.S. law could not be used for offensive military operations-"could create problems," but indicated that they might be able to "construe" the invasion as self-defense.* On 12 August 1975, a few days after a coup attempt in East Timor, Kissinger observed that an Indonesian takeover would take place "sooner or later".* Six months into the occupation of East Timor, Kissinger acknowledged to senior State Department officials that U.S. military aid had been used "illegally" and hinted at his own doubts about the invasion: Washington had "not very willingly" resumed normal relations with Jakarta.Over half a million Timorese were slaughtered, roughly the equivalent of 170 9/11s. It should be noted that this was one of the most bloodthirsty and disgraceful episodes in U.S. history, one studiously ignored by the U.S. press for two decades. On January 23, 1976, former Democratic Senator but then UN Ambassador Pat Moynihan, "...sent a top-secret cable to Kissinger in which he boasted about the 'considerable progress' he had made in blocking UN action on East Timor. Moynihan later wrote: 'The department of state desired that the United Nations prove utterly ineffective [on East Timor]. This task was given to me and I carried it through with no inconsiderable success'." (From John Pilger, 1999)

Chomsky is about the most intense polemicist one is ever likely to encounter, and as a consequence, when reading him one should be very careful to check his sources and be on guard for tenuous logical leaps. However, he is also has no fear of speaking the unspeakable, and a knack for exposing the dubious motives of much of U.S. foreign policy. This volume consists of five chapters, the first four of which are a usful examination of the U.S. role in propping up third world dictatorships around the globe in order to facilitate a "good invesetment climate" for foreign capitol. The fifth chapter is a highly questionable argument contending that "bloodbaths" in Communist controlled regions are played up for propaganda reasons. However, the wrong-headed nature of chapter 5.2 does not detract from the truthfulness of the analysis for the first four chapters. The book opens with a quote from Orwell: The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them." This is, in essence, the message of entire book, illustrated in example after example. Certainly worth a critical-minded read.

Volume 1 of Political Economy of Human Rights is a journal of American Imperialism in the contemporary context of the Third World. At over 350 pages, and replete with another 70 pages of notes and references, this tome is no less a scholarly endeavour than the other works of the authors and consequently provides for an informative look at US activity in most of the Third World. The book considers most countries in separate sections, provides background and historical reference and examines cause and effect. One common motif of the book is 'stability' as coveted above all by American interests and how different overt and covert means are imposed upon different countries to achieve it.The Washington Connection... is a brilliant foray into parts seldom travelled by popular media and recommended.

This has got to be one of the worst written books on Nursing Leadership. It was a required book, so it wasn't as if I picked it for some light reading. However, I was so appalled that a publisher actually agreed to print this book. First, it repeats itself numerous times throughout numerous chapters and the information is sorely disorganized. Interested in the actual definition of a specific leadership style? Yeah, forget it... she never explains everything fully (like actual vocab words) and I was often feeling like pulling my hair out while trying to complete study guides for class. Oh, and forget actually looking for a specific point, because you'll never find it, even with the appendix. Nothing makes sense. The writer also uses lots of cliches to make her point, dumbs down information and also uses business jargon that not everyone gets. A few times she refers to acronyms and business terms that are not defined, and I still have no idea what they mean.I beg the publisher not to make a new edition and please, please, stop printing the book. It's an indictment against the entire institution of nursing... and leadership.

This book was required for my nursing school - BSN program. I feel the selection of books my program chose were all very informative, to the point and we used the books for the classes that required them. During nursing school most people do not know where their career will take them, there are so many options the RN has available, so building a strong foundation is essential to success in the field. Nursing books are not written to be entertaining they are for educational purpose only. This book definitely offered education. After you graduate school and chose a path then find the best reference book you can find and carry it with you until the day you retire. I always recommend the additional study guide to a book if one is available.

Highly extraneous! It took twice as long to read through this textbook than any other textbook I've had in my whole college career. There are too many quote levels, too much website reference material, and too much dialogue/examples on common sense stuff. However, there are not enough examples and graphics on the tougher topics that would benefit from additional explanation.

I really wish my nursing program would have picked a different book. After repeatedly reading sections I would still not comprehend half of it. Business jargon is spread throughout the book with no explanation of most of it--almost as if they used a thesaurus for entire paragraphs then went back to middle-high school level for others. It would state a point and not explain it at all. Horrible. Absolutely terrible.

The book content is fine; what you would expect for a BSN nursing course. Easy to follow and well laid out.The quality of the rental itself is horrendous. The cover is very torn and just about to free itself from the binding, the first eight chapters are clearly water damaged, andthere is some kind of dark brown stain ( coffee?) saturating the top portion of the first few chapters causing several of the pages to be stuck together. It is useable, if you can get over the mental hump of the unknown sticky substance.I have rented for several years now and not had a problem. My review is to document the damages so they don't try to hit me with the full cost.

Not a fan. I didn't find this very well written at all, and I was able to gather better data from my own Google searches than was enclosed in this book. I can't say I would have bought it if it weren't a required text, but if I had bought it for some "light reading" I would have been thoroughly disappointed. As a classroom text, it was near useless.

Required for my leadership and management class for the BSN program. However, this was an excellent book. There is one section on conflict resolution that I had a friend read prior to trying to approach family members after a dispute. It really helped him understand conflicts and ideas on how to begin resolving issues. Best book from my nursing classes.

Dry reading, inconsistent views with nursing theory/evidence-based practice. I don't understand why my nursing school chose this, but there has to be better literature out there!
