I had plans to read a different book this summer. And I would have gotten away with it too, if not for Meddling Kids.Have you ever wondered how the Scooby Doo gang made the transition to adulthood? Not so well, as it turns out!Ok, so this book isn't really about the Scooby Doo gang exactly, but the allusions to that Saturday Morning source material are clear. They're mostly played straight too, which is a good decision. The author makes this book something more than just a fun ride for grown-up Scooby fans. It explores real questions about childhood trauma and their impact on adulthood, which are relevant even if you don't care much about the source material.Kerri experiences night terrors, Nate is institutionalized, Amy has steeled herself perhaps too much, and Peter is dead from a heroin overdoes. These are the scars affecting our cartoon heroes when we discover them again as adults. Can they find what made them heroes again in order to face off against the monster at the heart of their last case?Speaking of monsters, that's another fun angle to this book. Fans of the Scooby series will remember that, no matter how spooky things got in the case of the week, the supernatural threat was ultimately revealed to be a thief in a costume who had staged an elaborate ruse. What if one time, it wasn't just another guy in the costume? What if the kids stumbled onto a real Lovecraftian horror at one of those old haunted mansions, and the guy in the suit was just a ruse?This thing hits a lot of my buttons. I love Lovecraft. I like Scooby (although I am by no means a super fan), I love monster stories, and I love "returns" stories, where the old gang has to take get back together and remember who they were. In that way, the book is reminiscent of Stephen King's It, which of course has plenty of fans. They'll find a lot to love here too.So far all I've described here is the great concept behind this book. But that means nothing if it's not executed well. Thankfully, it is. Cantero's prose is lively and compelling. Other reviews have cautioned about his unconventional language. I barely noticed this. When I did, I found it delightful. It's a feature, not a bug.What are you waiting for? Go read this thing.

There are lots of very earnest reviews of this book that highlight it's take on Scooby-Doo and similar kid detective classics. (The book has shout outs to Enid Blyton and Nancy Drew and so on, and about a million sly references to the whole Scooby-Doo canon, right down to who has red hair. And of course there are lots of Lovecraft references.) There is also a lot of discussion by readers about whether the book works as a horror/humor/Lovecraft/detective mashup. All of that, of course, is legit, interesting and helpful.But, it should be noted and emphasized that this is a book by Edgar Cantero, and that guarantees it will be both more and less than just a straight up entertainment. Cantero's "The Supernatural Enhancements" delighted some and frustrated, annoyed and outraged others, and this book is a milder chip off that block. So, be warned that this book is a lot more than just a fond trip down Scooby-Doo memory lane.At the risk of introducing the dreaded "meta-fiction" word, that's in part what we have here. Cantero comments on his book as a book within the text of the book. (Along the lines of "...two lines later, they were still stunned".) He occasionally throws in a script format. He makes up words. He uses ridiculously obscure words. ("Borborygmic thunder", where borborygmic means the rumbling sounds made by movement of gas through the intestines.) He addresses the reader. He uses inapt similes and metaphors. He peppers the characters' dialogue with non sequiturs and random thoughts. Verbs become nouns and anything can be an adjective or adverb. People don't see things when they can laser them. Sometimes his intentionally awkward sentence structure makes Cantero feel like English is his second language, after Venusian. Some readers, like me, think this is a hoot; some just get fed up. (BTW, actually and truthfully, he usually writes in Catalan or Spanish. "The Supernatural Enhancements" was his first novel in English.)What is sometimes off-putting with Cantero is that he occasionally seems willing to mock the characters, the genre and his readers. One sometimes gets the feeling that he is above the whole writing-a-book thing and exists on some higher plane than mere book-reading mortals. But then, he tosses in some heart-breaking or lovely bit of prose, or some ridiculously funny throw away line, and you love him all over again.So, you can read this and enjoy it as a Scooby homage/lark. Or, you can read it as an idiosyncratic, experimental, anything-for-a-laugh, meta project by an interesting and sometimes maddening one of a kind author with a taste for disguised bizarro. Whichever way you go this is certainly a lot more interesting, entertaining and rewarding than any other Scooby-Doo based novel you're likely to find. I always enjoy checking out what Cantero is up to. I must have found this book in a search for something new and different. I like to vary my reading as a steady diet of histories can be monotonous and dreary. After reading a few pages I began to feel the pangs of regret. What had I gotten myself into with this book? A crew of children that formed a club of detectives for Summer entertainment go about solving local "crimes"? Apparently they did stumble onto something of a local mystery and managed to "solve" it to the satisfaction of local authorities and the press. The real story begins thirteen years later when and one of the "detectives" decides that their solution to that "crime" was wrong and the club has to reunite and go back to finish the job correctly. So Nancy Drew and company grow up and relive their childhood fantasies? Please no, not a juvenile mystery from the young adult section. Well I was spared the worst. It isn't what I feared but it also wasn't my cup of tea either. If you are a reader that enjoys tales involving things like vampires, zombies, occult incantations, strange and monstrous creatures and a little mystery then you will probably enjoy this book more than I did. Was it well written? Yes, but the author did seem to enjoy writing descriptions of fighting sequences a bit more than I cared for. Was it entertaining? Again, I would have to say yes though not as much to me as to somebody in to this genre. Would I recommend it? Probably not, unless I knew the reader like this form of adventure. I give it three stars as a well written addition to this genre of literary entertainment but, again, not my thing at all. (less)

Just read this one yesterday, and, as was the case with all of the pieces of his that I've read so far, Mark Horrell painted a rather vivid picture of what trekking through that remote part of the world still is, warts and all. I really enjoy reading his descriptions of the people he encounters, as well as the places, because he tends to not try to gloss over the less-than-pretty aspects of these kinds of trips. Somehow he manages to make all the misery that seems to be inextricably entwined with these treks funny (in an "Angela's Ashes" sort of way) and makes you feel as though you're slogging through the muck right along next to him.

Having done the Gokyo - Cho La last year I really enjoyed Marks comments on his trek and climbs. Planning to return in 2013 to do the Three Passes of Khumbu, so his comments on Renjo La were very helpful. However as an "old" trekker, now 64, I found his condescending comments on the elderly Japanese trekkers distasteful along with his thoughts near Namche Bazar about them tottering along on their walking poles and wondering why they did not do it when they were younger. Perhaps they were too busy making an income to bring up your generation. Mark, I think you should be commending them for attempting their trips instead of relegating them to homes for the aged. But apart from this, it was a great read and highly recommended for anyone thinking of going to the area.

For $1 on Kindle can't go wrong. Good little book on a trek from Lukla to Mera and Island Peaks and then to Goyko and back to Lukla. Well worth the dollar spent.

Gives insights into what it is like to trek the Himalayas and also into the Nepal culture.

The first "book" I read by Mark Horrell confused me a little, more or less dumping the reader into one of Mark's journeys into the high mountains without any real background but after reading two or more of these accounts you will get his style and just plain enjoy his descriptions of some distant destination, often lesser known that most mountaineering adventure spots. I would love to be have been able to live the life he has!

I have come to quite enjoy each of Mark Horrell's travel diaries, not only because of their details of what it's like to participate in a commercial trek or climb, but because of the self-effacing and witty style in which they're written. While I don't always get the British sense of humour, it's evident that some of the trek participants don't either! Entertaining!

Have other M Horrell's books. All are entertaining, earthy language is not off-putting to me...the book has detailed descriptions that helps me understand climbing better. Great photos.

This is the second of Horrell's books that I have read and it was much better that the first, Snowman trek. This one kept me looking forward to reading further. I enjoyed his discriptions of the climbing and of the trek to get to where he eventually summitted the mountain. I do recommend this book.

I'm a big fan of Marie Kondo. I think the most revolutionary idea she has is one that is often overlooked: she has given people (especially women) permission to figure out what makes you happy and get rid of what doesn't. It's hard to believe how many of us (especially women) live lives encumbered by the "shoulds" of others, while totally ignoring our own preferences, and I think this book is another great example of that.Please note, I'm not a hardcore Konvert - I've done things a bit more gradually than she prescribes... but her philosophies have really changed how I see my material things, and her books provide wonderful inspiration for anyone creating a home. Historically, I struggled with letting go of items because of the emotional significance attached to them, and this manga tells a very sweet story of Marie Kondo helping a young woman with that same struggle. I read this after having already read the first two, so while it wasn't "new" to me, it was really delightful. It's a lot more concise than "Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" and "Spark Joy" (both of which I really enjoyed, mind you), which means it is a great read for people who are pressed for time (or don't love reading longer books, or want to offer someone a quick intro to the method); it covers the essentials of the KonMari method and uses the visuals and narrative format to give some extra punch to the advice

I have two of the books on the Spark Joy philosophy. One even in Audio Book format. Yet I never seem to get through them. Yet in Manga, being a visual person, I got through it in a couple of days and actually Screen Captured some of the lessons and combined them into a note to remind me and help me keep and discard things that did or didn’t Spark Joy. Unlike some others, I had no issue with the head character falling in love with so many people (it happens in real life) or that learning to keep only things that Spark Joy actually might lead to better relationship (there are far more to relationships than love relationships) and how it opens up your life. I highly recommend this book. So enjoy.

Love it. So adorable. Fast read. Shows the concept and teaches the process in an easy to understand way. I like that the character Chiaki goes through a lot of the same reasons that we all do when you've never lived in a "non-messy" environment. I always thought it was just who i am and there were ppl who are neat and ocd and ppl who r not and then hoarders. But its all a choice and it helped me recalibrate my thoughts on why i never got rid of things. I thought if i had a memory i was suppose to keep it or if it wasnt broken i had to keep using it. Or certain clothes didnt have holes so better keep it even though its 10 yrs old and from high school and i dont fit it. The life changing magic of tyding up changed my life 2 yrs ago when i bought it. I didnt get to finish the process last time, but i have restarted it this week and this book helped resurge my spark.I did the clothes purge and got rid of a basket and a half to donate and threw away another basket worth. In the initial purge there were 2 baskets worth of my boyfriends clothes mixed in so i had to seperate that out as i went. All the white tanks are for work under my uniform. I have the hung stuff rising to the right but kept my workout tops in one section at the end together. I'll still have to reorganize them, but they feel better i think. Love that the drawers look pretty and i can see everything. Cant wait to do more and finally decorate aftr living in our new place for a year now. I want it to feel like a home not an apartment. We dont plan on moving for a long time so i dont feel like if i hang stuff on the walls im just gona take it down latr anyways so whats the point. I want to enjoy our space before we get a house, if we ever decide to, that is.

So I'd read through Marie Kondo's initial book a while back, and it was good information, but I guess I just didn't have a frame of reference for it. A couple years later I was frustrated with my apartment and my closet again, and noticed that there was a manga version of the book. It had good reviews and didn't seem very long, and I'd just read The Curated Closet and Goodbye Things, so I was in a better headspace to absorb the information this time.Long story short, THIS PRESENTATION WAS FANTASTIC!I even picked up a hard copy of this for my physical shelf and I think it will get to live there for quite a while. Also, I think when a character was used to go through the process (Chiaki) even though I don't have the same issues, it helped to see that it's not just a clinical process that hits everyone the same way, but it's a personal (I can't believe I'm going to use this phrase...sorry universe!) journey from where you are to where you want to go, and at some point if you're doing it right, it's going to feel weird.

I read the original book a few years ago and tidied up a lot, loved it. (I did not finish, but I’m getting there, I got stopped with injuries.) But I also have been trying to teach my 8 year old daughter about the core concepts. She loves graphic novels, so I picked this up in the hopes she would read it, and she did!After reading it I asked if she liked it and she said “I did! But I’m still not going to do it.” ;-)Then a month or so later she picked it up and read it again! And while cleaning her room with her grandmother yesterday said “you sort by categories, not location!” I said, “oh so you remember that from the book?” And got a face from her (doesn’t want mommy to be right) but I’ll take it. So while it may take her a bit to fully embrace, it was an approachable way for her to learn about tidying and she’s learning to let go of things she doesn’t need at a much earlier age than I did!

A condensed version of the two books. Enjoyable to read. Art style is very cute as well.

The book is great. The e-book format is awful. The print is often small and very hard to read. I can't find a way to make it larger.Marie helped me deal with the emotional side of keeping stuff so I could let go of what I no longer need
