EDIT: I've finished the book and my original opinion stands: It is enormously useful and life-changing. It's also changed how I do Reiki work, for myself in particular, in several major ways.I am still in the process of working with this book, but I can say I'm very pleased with it.I've been a Reiki Master for 12 years, and it's hard to find books that are of much use after that long. Most cover the basics for beginners -- not a bad thing in itself, but not a useful one for non-beginners. This book is intended for people who've had all the Usui Reiki attunements and have been working with the energy for a while, to help them find a next stage of spiritual development and growth. That's very rare to find; Reiki is spiritual healing, but very few Reiki books deal with actual healing and development *of* the spirit, which is what this one does.I get frustrated with a lot of spiritually-focused books because of their lack of practical usefulness. They promise methods and techniques in the cover matter, then never get beyond theory and philosophy and telling you how great it is to do something without ever explaining how that thing is done. That is not a problem with this book; it leaves the gates being practical and useful, and never stops. The attunements are powerful, the follow-up treatments are very effective, and the results have been life-changing for me. I am grateful beyond expression for this book.

Since I have taken Levels 1, 2, and 3 Reiki courses and became a Reiki Master I have intensified my study and research into this wonderful universal energy healing gift Dr. Mikao Usui left all of us whose passion is Reiki. I have read large number of the books and other published material on energy healing techniques and methods and I find great value in most of them. I just finished reading this very interesting and unique 168 page soft cover book (Reiki for Spiritual Healing by Brett Bevell) and this volume goes into greater depth than some of the other Reiki books. The focus in this easy to read and follow text is developing your spiritual skills along with the physical healing. It has some powerful procedures but this book was designed for more intense study and other approaches to Reiki.Some of the material covered in this book is as follows: The Reiki stairway to heaven, the first empowerment, the second empowerment, lifting up your mind on the Reiki stairway to heaven, the third empowerment, rising up from the place of your soul, stepping into infinity, the universal Reiki integration grid, stepping into forgiveness, advanced Reiki treatments for spiritual awakening, Lifting yourself into higher consciousness with Reiki Halos, ascending into the power of Rune Reiki, raising your consciousness with elemental Reiki, Reiki energy Koans and many other enlightening chapters.The author of this book also wrote the book Reiki magic guide to self-attunement which was also a fantastic book. I bought this at the recommendation of animator Ross O'Donovan from Game Grumps (he recommended this book during the Pokémon Art Academy series). I haven't started really diving into it, but so far the book is AMAZING.For one thing, the Animator's Survival Kit is no casual reference - it's a brick of a book overflowing with learning material. There are chapters upon chapters of really rich references and diagrams.I hope to learn a whole lot from following this book. I will update this review when I've explored it in more detail. But so far, everything about this book seems top knotch.

Awesome book to understand how animation works. The history/biography, in the beginning, was a little boring. But once I got past that, it was really good. I have been spending most of my time learning how animation software works from Adobe and Toon Boom Harmony (personal fave). And this book really fills all the holes on how animation works. I'm about 1/3 of the way done with the book already. I will have to update when done...but so far...I love it!

This is an amazing book!!! I cannot see why anyone would give this book less than a five. For the people out there that have never attempted to do an animation or find it very difficult and though if they bought this book they would be able to instantly do it with minimal effort. I'm sorry to say, the answer is No; animation is a difficult yet extremely underrated skill that most people assume to be easy. This book helps you with some of the steps to make a lot of the common animations you may encounter (Lip syncing was very helpful). It is more of a tool or reference guide to help you out during the animation process; It will not do the work for you; even thought I wish it would.

As a budding animator, reading this book was extremely helpful in thinking about animation in a different way from one of the pros.A lot went over my head as I'm a digital animator and a lot of the tips and tricks were more specifically for traditional, hand-drawn, cel animation, but the techniques are still extremely handy.The book is also quite easy to read. And not just because the language isn't overly complicated or technical. It's just a joy to sit down and study. Not dry at all and doesn't feel like a textbook.Absolutely recommend for anyone who wants an offline guide for animation techniques.

If you are an animator and you don't own this....*sigh* Nevermind.If you want to be an animator, this is a MUST in your library sitting right next to your copy of the Illusion of Life.This is CORE reading for aspiring animators and a survival guide for working professionals. For the last 11 years of my career, I have referred to this guide religiously.

Super helpful for beginners :)

I'm 60 pages in without realizing it and it is so far a really solid and thorough read. Indepth history of the development of animation, quotes from staple-greats, beautifully crafted lessons, the author has an enjoyable voice, and you don't feel as if you're reading a textbook, yet you are definitely learning valuable lessons, and it's full of wonderful insights into the industry, the way to setup animations, and an unbeatable amount of referencesto animations, artists, books, that are all worth the lookup. I've never been happier.

I'm no kind of animator, and not a 'great' artist or anything (need far more practice ^_^). But even just skimming this book, it's amazing! It goes into depth that feels like someone is tutoring you on each little topic, and you're like "Yeah, that makes a LOT of sense!" It SHOWS everything that it's saying. I have enjoyed it immensely so far and once I ever actually try to animate anything I'm sure it will come in even more handy.

Love this book.

Awesome!

This book is an okay addition to your collection if you are someone who must have every book on a subject, regardless of quality. It is not informative enough to be a beginner book, and the projects are not sophisticated enough to be a book for a serious hobbyist. Nothing against the author and her projects, but it was a waste of money for me.

I have several mosaic books, and I enjoyed how this one "kept" you grounded with the basics. Very easy to follow, excellent "INTRO" to mosaics.

Great book.

Excellent book. Good ideas, good pictures, good instructions. Would recommend to others starting out with glass mosaics.

As a newbie, I think this book covered a lot of ground. The design projects weren't run of the mill or too rustic-looking. The contents were thorough. All materials, tools and techniques were well explained and accompanied by pictures/examples. There are 15 excellent projects from napkin rings, to vases, to bookends - all well explained and with great pictures. Templates and supplies are also included. All in all a good book for a beginner and perhaps for more advanced.

The beautiful cover fooled me completely. The desings are poor and execution and finishing of the mosaics are even poorer. I regret having purchased this book, specially having so many other options.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of English translation. I was very annoyed with the Russian original: misspelled, typos are quite common. If somebody is learning Russian and tries to find a word in a dictionary, with the kind of spelling I found in this Russian text the chances are the word will never be found. Russian text is poorly formatted.The idea of the book is fantastic, the selection of stories is good, quality of the articles about the writers is excellent.The Russian text has to be fixed.

I have had problems with the Kindle editions of other books with non-standard page layout, so I I ordered this in the expectation that I would be somehow disappointed in the experience. I just wanted to see how close an e-edition could come to the hardcopy ideal of facing-page layout. I think there is probably a solution to the bilingual facing-page tradition in kindle editions, but no one in the kindle display coding factory has figured it out yet. The best thing I can say is that if your primary goal is learning the language, flipping a couple of pages forward to check the English translation before jumping back to the Russian is annoying in the extreme, but not absolutely fatal to the learning experience.On a larger tablet screen, maybe the books could be displayed in top and bottom panels; I don't think side by side columns would work, but there might be hope for a tablet held in landscape mode. (I haven't looked into the full-screen on-line reader app because I don't read books that way.) On a small Kindle screen, even the new larger Oasis, there just isn't enough display space to do what needs to be done.

A great compilation of all the major well-known middle-through-high-school level Russian stories. I would not recommend it for someone trying to learn (modern) Russian though. The language used in these stories is way too complicated for a novice or even an advanced level Russian speaker. Certain words are obsolete and extremely hard to understand since they're completely eradicated from everyday use. And simply relying on the accompanying translation is not really effective. I found quite a few inaccuracies there; editors didn't really do a thorough job editing...I guess, the verdict is as follows: if you're looking to learn Russian, move on and choose something more appropriate; this book will only mess up your existing knowledge.As a native speaker, I just read it for fun and joy of correcting bungled translation....

My first experience with a dual-language book was an English-German dual language "Faust" many years ago. At that point I realised the effectiveness of this methodology.Many years after, having reached the intermediate level of Russian, I decided to get a dual language book as I did in German and I found this one. My experience shows that half of the language books in the market are just useless or of little use. So I was not sure about getting it, until I noticed that it is a Dover book and I have very good experiences with Dover books (for example Brian Kemple-Essentials of Russian Grammar). So I got it.What I like most about this book are as follows:* You can see the exact translation of every Russian word and phrase so no need to use a dictionary. This is a real comfort if you don't like to keep on searching over a dictionary for unknown words .* You read the masters. This is very motivating. If you learn Russian and if you can read Pushkin in its original, this is a real reward.* Intros are quite good. You can learn new facts about the great Russian authors, who set the foundations of one of the world's most fascinating literature.So I recommend this book to anyone who wants to master in Russian language. However, a little remark, this text is not very elementary. I would suggest that you first get the basics and then work on this book.

Excellent learning tool.1) Accents are in the book. This helps pronounce the words. Other series do not have this.2) The translation nicely follows sentence by sentence, it does not abstract. This allows for checking your attempts much easier than a loose translation.Not much else to say, really. The stories are surely great but that is hardly the point of the book.

This is a reprint of a book from a series of bilingual readers that that first came out under Bantam Publishers in the 1960's. It was out of print, then Dover did what it does best: It bought the rights to "Russian Stories" and made it available to a whole new generation of intermediate-to-advanced language learners. In line with the other books in the series, it presents the original text on the left side with a good translation into English on the right page. (One of its sister-books, "First German Reader," is how I initially made the jump from being a beginner to becoming eventually fluent in that language.) "Russian Stories" brings you selections from masters of Russian prose, such as Pushkin, Gogol, Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Chekhov, as well as more recent authors. It even gives the reader advice on which order in which to read the stories, starting from the easiest and progressing to more difficult texts. If you want to read real Russian literature--not simplified versions or textbook anecdotes--this is the place to begin.

I was happy to come across this as it's one of the only digital books to have stress marks in Russian. However, there are A LOT of typos and misplaced stresses. Also, students of Russian language should be forewarned that many of the Russian words and expressions are dated and 'literary' - not used in contemporary colloquial language. This is ideal for passionate readers of Russian literature, but less so for those who seek mastery of conversational Russian.

It's tough to find these. Most are of questionable quality. I like this particular book because the translated stories are from Russian authors my Ukrainian / Russian students will be familiar with. It helps give a sense of English when viewed side-by-side, and familiar works for the student, help.
