Pro tip: Sometimes if baby gets up too early, I bring him into the big bed, sit him up and just open this book to the front page (which has circular patterns filled with different animal footprints)...and baby studies this page for a LOOOONG time while I get some more sleep. Thank you for the extra ZZZs, Lindsay Craig and Marc Brown!I read this book to baby at least twice a day (he's now 7mo), and he's still super interested every time. The rhythmic poetry is really catchy, and the artwork is great too! I just ordered the companion book, Barnyard Beat -- and I hope it'll be a hit with baby too.

We absolutely love this book. I buy it for all of my friends' kids. It is fun, great to read, rhyming, and interactive. I tickle my daughters for "creepity," we stop our feet, and wiggle our fingers for "clickety." I can't recommend it enough.

Fits right in with other books for baby with physical activity and sound effects you can create

Great book. I was a gift to a little great grand daughter

The book is awesome. The kindle version is _terrible_. The pictures are so small you can't actually see the wonderful illustrations. I'm convinced no human actually had anything to do with converting it to kindle. Sigh.

Bought this for my kindergarten music class to accompany a lesson on walking to a steady beat. The kids love the bright pictures and can't wait to guess which animal comes next in the story.

My two year old just loves this book. I bought it because he kept coming home from daycare talking about it. He'd memorized it before he got his own copy, but he still loves reading it. Very cute and an easy quick read.

My daughter loves to read this book along with Farmyard Beat at bedtime! Such cute books! We love the rhythm of them

Within the Plantation Household: Black and White Women of the Old South (Gender and American Culture)

From Library Journal

In her rich and rewarding book, Fox-Genovese challenges many of the conventions about women's history, which has been largely extrapolated from the experiences of northeastern women. Southern womenblack and whitewere southerners, bound by a rural world built on human bondage and race and dominated by men. These women were not passive or victims, but resourceful and resistant. Still, Fox-Genovese rejects the now fashionable view that planters' wives harbored antislavery or feminist sentiments. She places slave women at the center of opposition to slavery. Fox-Genovese has given black and white Southern women voices. Eloquent and powerful; for university and public libraries.Randall M. If you are a history buff of the American South, or someone interested in racial and gender roles, this is the book for you. It is filled with original source material and powerfully conveys the complex and intermixed relations in the plantation household. This book undermines the stereotypes which have tended to dominate popular conceits about the South and Southern women's lives, both black and white.

A great look at how women's history, culture and thought in the South differed from the Northern Suffrage movement. It also portrays everyday life through letters, friendships and historical survey.

Good read

Elizabeth Fox-Genovese has produced a very scholarly and enlightening examination of women of the old South. In vivid detailed with painstaking research, she presents the daily lives of women, black and white, within the plantation household. Though written from an academic perspective, the author has succeeded in presenting her research in an entertaining and even captivating narrative style. For those looking for the behind the scenes lifestyle of unknown women of the South, this is the one book of choice.Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction." He has also authored "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," and the forthcoming "Sacred Friendships: Listening to the Voices of Women Soul Care-Givers and Spiritual Directors."

Reading about the way ladies lived in the Old South is interesting. Both Black and White women had problems and struggles in their lives, though obviously, slaves were not free to choose their fate.

An absolutely excellent study of of the relationship between slave-owner and the enslaved. The book struck me a college-level treatise but is easily read and enjoyable even for the casual reader. Tremendous details of both black and white lives in the pre-Civil War era. Highly recommend to anyone interested in life in the south during that period.

Interesting book

Excellent.

From the Author

Our book offers parents the opportunity to learn in three hours what we learned in three years. I wrote it with my co-author because we didn't want mothers and fathers to feel alone. My favorite letters are ones in which the parents say "After reading your book, I finally realize I'm not crazy." or "After reading your book, I can finally relax and sleep soundly." In addition, this book has helped many parents improve their child's blood sugar control.

So useful and well writ. Jack Weltner

The book does a great job of offering alternatives and while some may not be right for cetain folks, the open and honest approach to finding a personal path was great and well worth exploring. It stimulates thought and ideas and gives options to consider that aren't usually discussed in as much detail from a parent's perspective. While I don't pretend to know all of the most detailed clincal thinking on the subject, its common sense approach to eating healthier--not just for children with diabetes, but for all children--seems right on target given the epedemic in childhood obesity. I think the other reviewer's comments focusing heavily on the honeymoon period and insulin strategy miss the point--I didn't think that was the core point. And I also don't agree that the book is alarming--rather, it's reassuring because it opens so many doors for support not commonly known or understood. It's a fast read with much to digest! For parents looking to gather more information with a broader perspective on the disease, this is a great choice!

This book was written as a labor of love, and the author obviously loves her son without bound and would do anything to help him. The problem with this is that love can sometimes skew our realistic view of certain situations. As a person living with diabetes for 11 years, as well as a member of a family of multiple people living with diabetes, I definitely understand the trials and tribulations, the emotional, physical, and blood sugar ups and downs that can occur with this disease. I can also say that complete and utter control- meaning precise schedules, specific food and excersize plans, etc. are not neccessarily the best and most effective way to deal with diabetes. Of course this method works, but there comes a point in every diabetic's life when they are out of control for whatever reason. It is extremely important for a child with diabetes to learn how to deal with this aspect on his own, and as soon as possible, to prepare him for the inevitable independent adulthood which will come sooner than the parent expects. Yes, it is possible to be a healthy diabetic with controlled blood sugars as well as an independent person who makes his own decisions about his own body. Many parents cannot grasp this part of diabetes, and I worry about the repercussions for this type of life when this child is grown and living on his own.

This book, I think, is intended for families with children newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and their friends. Having a child with Type 1, I have been through many of the ups and downs described in the book. The most valuable part of the book is Plunkett's demonstrating, through her family's story, how unpredictiable, inscrutable, and frustrating managing type 1 diabetes can be. Understanding that you don't just get your doses right and then sail through with even blood glucose is something it took me over a year to realize. This book could make you feel that you're not alone in this aspect of diabetes management. However, much of this book could be alarming to parents trying to manage a newly diagnosed child. For example, she describes at length her efforts to extend the honeymoon period of her son's disease. This part might sow seeds of doubt-- should readers also seek out an acupunturist, do reflexology? Most diabetes health care professionals would probably say no -- there has been no clear medical evidence that such terapies help-- but this book pretty clearly advocates for alternative medicine. Moreover, she conveys a sense that less insulin = good and more insulin = bad. Here's a typical quote: "The day before his first acupuncture treatment, Danny had had three shots and a total of fifteen units of insulin. A week after the treatment, he was on one shot of 6 units!" This is an unhealthy way to view the disease. Finally, most of this book concerns managing a child using multiple daily insulin injections, an approach that fewer families adopt now, as more and more children are using insulin pumps. Management changes considerably with insulin pumps, making many of the lessons learned/ challenges described in this book less valuable to someone looking to glean tips for managing thier own or thier child's condition. In the final chapter, Plunkett even admits that : "Our transition to the pump in the third year of Danny's illness transformed the rhythms of our family in so many ways that its hard to explain why we waited so long." The third part of the book consists of a "Survival Guide for parents", which contains lists very similar to what most health care providers or advocacy group give out for free -- e.g., supplies needed, tips for "self care", and meal suggestions. This might be useful for families who do not have a good medical team, but most of the content will likely already have been given to anyone newly diagnosed.BOTTOM LINE:Plunkett's portrays the whirlwind of managing type1 diabetes with honesty and warmth, however, her focus on extending the honeymoon period, using alternative medicine, and reducing the amount of insulin doses could cause even more anxiety in those new to diabetes and its management.

The parent of a child newly diagnosed with diabetes can be overwhelmed, terrified, and desperate. Seeing the medical team infrequently, talking to a busy intern on the phone in moments of panic, and trying to make sense of a myriad of how-to books can cause the parent of the newly diagnosed child to struggle during the day and stay awake at night worrying. This author has been there, hit the depths and emerged to write the tale. Her book offers advice for a new normal with family members closer than ever and the child achieving blood sugar levels below the national average in the range where later complications will be avoided. The book has practical advice to help deal with this difficult situation - about diet and exercise as well as a cooperative spirit of sharing the dailiness of life with those close. Certainly family can pull together. This book should be shared with teachers and the parents of friends of the child so that they can be supportive and understanding. If you the parent of a child with diabetes and are struggling to keep it together, you can learn alot from this book and make your entire family healthier, emotionally and physically.

One of the most important books--not just China books--of our time.” ―Arthur Waldron, The New Criterion“A vital testimony of a largely buried era.” ―Clarissa Sebag-Montefiore, The Independent“Yang's discreet and well-judged pursuit of his project over more than a decade is a quietly heroic achievement.” ―Roger Garside, China Rights Forum“Tombstone easily supersedes all previous chronicles of the famine, and is one of the best insider accounts of the Party's inner workings during this period, offering an unrivalled picture of socioeconomic engineering within a rigid ideological framework . . . meticulously researched.” ―Pankaj Mishra, The New Yorker“Eye-opening . . . boldly unsparing.” ―Jonathan Mirsky, The New York Times Book Review“Beautifully written and fluidly translated, Tombstone deserves to reach as many readers as possible.” ―Samuel Moyn, The Nation“[An] epic account . . . Tombstone is a landmark in the Chinese people's own efforts to confront their history.” ―Ian Johnson, The New York Review of Books“The toll is astounding, and this book is important for many reasons--difficult to stomach, but important all the same.” ―Kirkus Review“Mao's Great Famine of the late 1950s continues to boggle the mind. No one book or even set of books could encompass the tens of millions of lives needlessly and intentionally destroyed or explain the paranoid megalomania of China's leaders at the time. As with the Holocaust, every serious new account both renews our witness of the murdered dead and extends our understanding. Zhou Xun here selects, translates, and annotates 121 internal reports from local officials to their bosses. They form a frank, grisly, and specific portrait of hysteria defeating common sense. Zhou's University of Hong Kong colleague, Frank Dikötter, extricated some of these documents from newly opened (and now again closed) archives in local headquarters across China for his Mao's Great Famine: The History of China's Most Devastating Catastrophe 1958–1962, but Zhou's book stands on its own. A useful introduction, headnotes to each chapter, a chronology, and explanatory notes frame the documents. VERDICT Accessible and appealing to assiduous readers with knowledge of Mao's China; especially useful to specialists.” ―Charles W. Hayford, Evanston, IL“A book of great importance.” ―Jung Chang, author of Wild Swans and co-author of Mao: The Unknown Story“A truly necessary book.” ―Anne Applebaum, author of Gulag: A History“In 1989 hundreds, perhaps thousands, of Chinese died in the June Fourth massacre in Beijing, and within hours hundreds of millions of people around the world had seen images of it on their television screens. In the late 1950s, also in Communist China, roughly the inverse happened: thirty million or more died while the world, then and now, has hardly noticed. If the cause of the Great Famine had been a natural disaster, this double standard might be more understandable. But the causes, as Yang Jisheng shows in meticulous detail, were political. How can the world not look now?” ―Perry Link, Chancellorial Chair for Innovative Teaching, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, University of California, Riverside“Hard-hitting. . . It's a harrowing read, illuminating a historic watershed that's still too little known in the West.” ―Publishers' Weekly“Groundbreaking…The most authoritative account of the Great Famine…One of the most important books to come out of China in recent years.” ―Ian Johnson, The New York Review of Books“The most stellar example of retrospective writing on the Mao period from any Chinese pen or computer.” ―Perry Link, Chancellorial Chair for Innovative Teaching, Comparative Literature and Foreign Languages, University of California, Riverside“The first proper history of China's Great Famine.” ―Anne Applebaum, The Washington Post“A monumental work comparable to Solzhenitsyn's Nobel Prize-winning work The Gulag Archipelago.” ―Xu Youyu, Chinese Academy of Social Science

I was born in Beijing in 1985, and lived there through 7th grade. Growing up in the 90's I often heard my elders refer to the "Three Years of Natural Disaster" as a period of hardship - all my family resided in Beijing and Shanghai, and they were deprived of food -but they were not starved (My grandma used to talk about buying crumbs of bread and saving the one egg she was able to find for my mother). My grandparents went through the labor reform camps and my parents were left at home to be looked after by good hearted neighbors and relatives. Not a easy life by any means, but no one in my family died from this "Three Years of Natural Disaster."NEVER have I heard about cannibalism, mass starvation and the wiping out of entire families. Why? Because, I now realize, that all the people who died were people who lived in the poorest areas of the country, with no power to ask for anything. 45 million people died brutal, torturous deaths. There were villages where so many people died, that they had to quarantine the entire area so that news didn't get out. There was NO WAY for people who lived in the major cities to know the extent of suffering the rest of China went through. But what shocked me even more is that this was never a NATURAL disaster...there was nothing natural about any of it. In fact, the entire tragedy was brought on by a chain reaction composed of greed, oppression and cowardice. Politics, bureaucracy, and a power hungry totalitarian ruler were what caused this famine.Okay, I don't want to go into much detail here because I am getting carried away...This book is life changing for me, as a child of the new-generation China. I grew up in a westernized and prosperous Beijing, and even China from the 1970's was far removed from me. There is an assumption that my generation doesn't really care about what happened before, because we got in made - we're the first generation to fully experience the benefits and wealth brought on by Deng Xiaoping's policy to open up to the west. I had Coca-cola, I had Mcdonald's. I was an only child, and so were all my classmates, and we were all spoiled to bits. Perhaps it is because of our removal from that history of suffering that they think it is a good opportunity to bury the past, starting from us.This book pulled back the curtains and revealed to me this gaping hole in my history book. It is like finding out my mother is a serial killer. I could not sleep for days, and cried through every page. But I know that as a Chinese person, I have a responsibility to read this book. To not read it would be like allowing this enormous lie to keep festering in me. I wish that every Chinese person could read this and know the truth. Too bad it is banned in China, and I doubt it would ever see the light of day.I am not a political person, but I can't stand the thought of millions dying for no reason. They did die for no reason, though - a genocide on this scale is beyond all reason/justification - but the least we could do now is to KNOW about it. These were people who spoke my language, and celebrated the same holidays, and knew the same folklores. It just hits me so hard - I never thought there could be this deliberate, government induced mass extinction in the recent history of China, covered up so well. I thought I was fortunate to be born in a country that has never invaded anyone or started any wars. Turned out it was too busy killing off its own people.Anyway, if you are like me - if you grew up in China and went to school there...I think you owe it to yourself to read this book. We've been lied to, we've been treated as unthinking, unfeeling fools with no conscience.... Don't let them do that to you anymore. If you have an opportunity to get this book, get it and read it. We have a right to know, and to lament for our own.

Facts and figures, facts and figures, facts and figures. No real personal human interest stories, which seems strange since it chronicles the needless and early deaths of more than 35 million Chinese people due to Mao's evil policies. It shows what can happen when average people blindly follow an evil man, and how even good ideas can be corrupted by simple people put in charge of their peers with no training and no accountability. My wife is a survivor of that time, being born in China in 1958. This book does help me understand why she is always hungry, grows a huge garden, is always preparing food, and gets frantic if a meal is an hour late; food is the most important thing in her life. None of us, not even the poorest of the poor, in the U.S. can comprehend what tens of millions of Chinese suffered in the late 1950's and 1960's. I wish the author would have used the help of a professional writer to make an easier read, but it is none the less an important historical book.

Yang's book is a very thorough exhaustive and exhausting history of the Great Chinese Famine that was the direct result of the Great Leap Forward. In wondering how 36 million people died of starvation (with an estimated 76 million total decline in potential population due to a dramatically curtailed birth rate along with the unnatural death rate), this book details policies, politicians' and civilians' actions that all contributed to this disaster. This book is thoroughly researched and documented, One of the most important aspects of this book that made me want to read it and continue reading it is that it is based upon Chinese archival material and through eyewitness accounts. Yang's book is nothing short of overwhelming though. His account details the inhumanity starvation caused as society broke down during these years. The barbaric behavior of so many is presented again and again through actions such as widespread cannibalism, corruption, ambivalence, deception, and ignorance. Therein lies the problem though. Yang has so much material in this book that the accounts he presents seem to reoccur endlessly in the book. The fact that this single volume was condensed from the ordinal publication in two volumes is stunning since I cannot imagine reading two volumes of this. This one volume was more than enough for me. Yang presents an enormous amount of data, but his descriptions of that data is mind-numbingly dull at times. This book is probably best appreciated by experienced historians and scholars of modern China. This book will help any serious student of contemporary China to understand the emergence of the modern state of the People's Republic of China as it left behind a horrific tragedy.

Awesome new addition to Rand McNally's Road Atlas selection! It's the size of their regular folded state maps but thicker, and includes excellent detail for all 50 states, plus Canada. Perfect for when you're trying to keep the airline carry-on luggage to a minimum. More importantly for me, there's an excellent selection of city close-ups, which is really helpful for travel planning. I hope they continue updating this product in the future.

overall only OK you will need a magnifying glassbut is does fit in clove box :=)

VERY concise! It's 40 pages with large print. Not worth the money. Not all that insightful either. People looking for a short introduction to American Indians would do better to see Perdue and Green's "North American Indians, A Very Short Introduction" which is equally short, but has more real information such as summary of the major policy issues.Actually, not concise because the word concise means not only brief, but also distilling the essence of a subject. This book is very weak on basic info. Also it gives no references for what it does say.North American Indians: A Very Short Introduction

Native american have great impacts on the present americans now. I never thought that the reason why the natives in america were called indians because columbus thought that this land is india. However, despite being low in populations, the american indians still has lived all throughout today. Their ways of living influenced the way we live today even though we are now in a very convenient world made by technologies nonetheless, their ways of surviving are somewhat relevant to how we live today. This book has briefly and informatively explained the history of the native americans.

Unbelievably short and lacking in content - the whole book is a mere 32 pages long, thinner than any free report I could download from the web any day for free. At $13, this is clearly a rip-off.

Very educative book. This guide book can be use as reference for history classes. Its really important to have knowledge about history of our nation. This book enables you to know the variety of indigenous people, their different dialects, cultures and understanding. Learn what life has been during their times, and what they had impart in our society.

i wanted to know more about native american culture and history so i bought this book, and i am glad did, well written easy to read and understand, this book helped me improve my knowledge about native american culture, i recommend this book to anyone

Anyone wanting to understand the Native Americans should read this.I really enjoyed this book. So many great pieces of advice that can be used today. Thank you

This was short and straightforward. Great relatable information. Full of facts with a positive outlook at the end. Highly recommend for people looking for a "summary" of Native Americans.

Poorly written. Very superficial. Covered only few tribes and late stages.

I have to confess something. I didn't want to read Bagger Vance. Or rather, I wanted to wait for a day when I might be "ready" to read it, whatever that means. On the one hand, I didn't want to have read all of Pressfield's books. There's a certain finality in that, kind of like having eaten ever last chocolate bar in the cupboard. Knowing that there was still one more chocolate bar, one more Pressfield book on the shelf, something to savor later, was kind of comforting. I didn't want to let go of that.On the other hand, I have no interest in golf whatsoever. I don't play it. I don't watch it. I don't care for it. The closest I ever come to a golf course is when I ride my carbon-fiber bike during a training ride. As I pedal by, the golfers stare at me, I stare at them, we all silently wish that we could be in the other's shoes and then thank our lucky stars that we aren't. It's the little game we play in our heads just before nodding to one another and returning to our respective games. I pedal, they swing. And yet, in that moment, we find something that connects us. There is a glimmer of recognition, of understanding, of communion, even. I now understand what that something is.So anyway, I waited. I put it off. And then last week, I couldn't put it off any longer. I had just read The Profession, The Warrior Ethos and Do The Work. I needed more. I guess I was ready, bare cupboard or not.The Legend of Bagger Vance isn't like Pressfield's other books. It feels slightly less polished at times, closer to the idea, nearer to the source material, and that is one of the many ways in which this book shines. It combines his extraordinary story-teller's talent with insights into the human psyche in a wonderful back and forth of context and insight. The Legend of Bagger Vance is the rare book that both entertains thoroughly AND has something to say beyond the vague exploration of a theme. It goes far beyond that. This book doesn't just make you think. It teaches. It also has the added charm of having been Pressfield's first. It is perhaps precisely because I don't care for golf that I enjoyed it so much. Yes, it's about golf. But no, it isn't about golf at all. Everyone should read this book, regardless of their relationship to the sport itself, and then read it again and again, at least once a year if not more often. Read it once and you will understand why. It makes a terrific father's day gift. Give it to your son on his birthday and your brother on Christmas. Share it with your friends and co-workers. It's that kind of book. It may very well make a difference in someone's life.As for my new problem (being out of new Steven Pressfield books to read), there's always his blog.Don't be surprised if the next book I read is Gates of Fire, for the second time. Like much of Pressfield's work, once is not enough.

Perhaps the most spiritual book about the game of golf ever written. Filled with beautiful prose & punctuated with soul inspiring bits of timeless poetry ( think Wordsworth here) Steven Pressfield takes us on a timeless journey, employing the warrior archetype in the arena of competitive golf told from the perspective of an 11 year old boy.The caddy, Bagger Vance, is our teacher & from him we learn the holiness of sport; the purity of competition 'purged of ego', and how beings at pLay are participants in the act most pleasing to God.I have given friends this book, and they take it with them when - as I do- play golf.Thank you Stephen Pressfield

Better tha the movie-sorry matt Damon and will smith-but this was a spiritual journeyIt's hood be read with golfing with god and maybe then you'll understand what u need to do the next time u go out there on the links.I think a new movie needs to be made about the last part and i cna see it fasted with me-the old doc and two up and coming "tigers" someplace on the west coast in Oregon sheeep links

I kind of backed into reading The Legend of Bagger Vance. I was familiar with the adaptation of the story from watching the movie (which I liked), but I started reading Steven Pressfield’s books because I was trying to improve myself as an author – and I was very interested in how he has been so successful – so I started with The Authentic Swing: Notes from the Writing of a First Novel…which, by the way, knocked my socks off (see my review). Of course, after reading the notes and backstory of how he wrote The Legend of Bagger Vance, I had no choice but to read it. That was a great decision.I’m a golf duffer, but was raised around the game, my father having won a Bob Hope Pro-Am, and my mother having won a Regional while we were stationed in Turkey. I always liked it, but never really took it up until I was stationed in Hawaii – and I only took it up to pass the time. I really fell in love with the game, but as all golfers know, I never really understood the almost mystical fascination of the game. I don’t think I ever will. The Legend of Bagger Vance takes a hard run at revealing some of the underlying forces. The book equates “The Authentic Swing” with a person’s own True Self, which oftentimes gets lost in the press of life. When someone loses or walks away from themselves, they often lose sight of their own purpose, who they actually are. This is book is ostensibly about golf, but moreover, I saw it as a book about being true to yourself, to your life, and the people in it.This is a very good book. It makes me at once want to read the classics (Wordsworth – “trailing clouds of glory” – pg. 70), and go out on the course (evolution of the swing, the Self – pgs. 71, 72). The feeling of being out in the open air, in nature, striving hard to relax into yourself is almost addictive. The character development, narrative device, plot, and just good storytelling brought me deep into the world of Rannulf Junah, Bagger Vance, and the world of Golf and Self, as seen through the eyes of the young Hardison Greaves. For most of the book (first and last parts), it is an enthralling book that completely drew me in. I was on the links with them, watching the external, and more interestingly, the internal struggles. I could see them, feel them, I was one of them. As a combat vet myself, I completely empathized with Junna’s struggle to get past all the horror of war and try to come to grips with himself in the rest of the book, but the center part of the book goes too far down the metaphysical rabbit hole for me. It distracted me from what I saw as the main theme, and pushed me back out of the pages into just reading a book. The departure into a realm wherein the characters were not just in a mystical, internal place during their struggles, but actually regressed through time, space and reality into the distant past and other spiritual or cosmic planes completely threw me off the story, and reminded me of some ‘60’s trip in the middle of a ‘20’s struggle for self.Despite what appeared to be a distracting departure, this book is well worth the read. Thoroughly enjoyable, deeply introspective, and a strong reminder of the constant struggle with the adversity of life and trauma to retain – or find – your one, true Self.

I have always been a fan of the movie and did not know it was a book. Found it and read it. This book takes the movie to a whole new level by providing a better understanding of who Bagger Vance was and his influence on the lives of many. I couldn't put the book down. It was great.
