Great Tahoe Brooke.

Very beautiful photography in this large, very heavy book. I love how it spent a considerable portion on the Indigenous people of the Lake Tahoe area. Very informative.

Visiting the Nevada State Art Museum to see the exhibit I perused the book as well and decided to get a copy for my library, it is a wonderful collection of historical art of the era.

Lake Tahoe is truly one of the most breathtaking locations on the face of the earth. It is only natural that writers would attempt to convey some sense of that majesty between the covers of a book. This most recent coffee-table pictorial is no exception. This book is not your standard contemporary collection of photography but rather a chronicle of the history of the area as seen through the eyes of the artists who’ve tried to capture that beauty. There are plenty of photographic images to be sure, but they are mostly vintage views that help the reader get some sense of the Lake’s history.The paintings and woodcuts selected for this volume were well chosen and as good a collection as one is likely to find in any book on the subject. The obligatory examples of more contemporary art at the tail end are not nearly as impressive but fortunately don’t take up too many of the book's pages.I can’t really comment on the text in its entirety as I have yet to read the book from cover to cover. And as the text is a secondary consideration in pictorial books I am commenting on my first impressions after a cursory read. That being said, what I have read seems to be well informed and of benefit to the illustrations.This is a well produced volume and the images are all high definition. All the elements are there to offer any reader an enjoyable browsing experience. For someone living in the Tahoe region or who may have a vacation residence in the vicinity this would make an excellent addition to that stack on your coffee-table.My only criticism is the amount of space set aside for the region’s Indian basketry. Over a hundred pages of the book are devoted to this subject. The baskets Ms. Wolfe has chosen to highlight are no doubt exceptional but it doesn’t seem, at least in this reviewer's opinion, to dovetail well with the book’s principle theme. There is ample enough material here to have produced a separate book. And for those whose interest is the lake alone, they would probably have preferred it that way.I don’t want to knock off a full star for the above complaint but I think it should be noted none the less. Overall, I think this a book anyone with an interest in Tahoe would appreciate. And, if in addition to a love of Lake Tahoe you are passionate about Native American basketry you will have really hit the jackpot!

Raven transforms himself into a pine needle so that he will be consumed by the chief's daughter as she drinks from the stream. He then is born a boy. Gradually the boy's doting grandfather allows him to play with each box in turn. First raven releases the stars, then the moon, and finally he returns to his former shape to fly up the smoke hole of the lodge with the third box. The story is fast moving with its magical transformations, and the language is simple and direct. The illustrations are dramatically shaded watercolor and acrylic drawings full of Native American detail and design. Many of them play with various reflections of light. Particularly effective are the scenes depicting the transformations and those in the lodge. Reborn as the chief's grandson, he whines, cajoles, and throws tantrums until the indulgent old man hands over the heavenly bodies. After escaping through a sooty smoke-hole with the sun, Raven's feathers are permanently black. Watts's paintings, with the enthroned chief clad in heavy Chilkat ceremonial robes and surrounded by carved boxes and other evidence of wealth, are at odds with Dixon's light touch. The powerful, stylized animal motifs of Northwest Coastal art, seen by bright firelight, seem an integral part of the vibrantly colored natural world--more so than the clownish human figures, which add little to the story save some exaggerated gestures and grimaces. Being a Tlingit Indian, and this being a tale from my culture---I appreciate this particular rendition. It is a book I read to my elementary class every year and it's structure lends itself well to the classroom. The illustrations are absolutely breathtaking.

Perfect addition to my unit of Native Americans, and their folktales. My class loved hearing and reading this beautiful book.

This is such a beautiful book. I adopted two children from Peru, and I spotted this book because it featured people who were not of European descent, but the pictures and the language are poetry.

I just finished Farnsworth's Classical English Rhetoric--also a great book--and I got an email reminder from Amazon that I could write a review of this one. I bought the book on the strength of Farnsworth's guest blogging at Volokh Conspiracy, and was glad I did. Before encountering the blog posts and the book, I would have said that restitution was merely a kind of remedy, occasionally useful in contract disputes and even more rarely in tort cases of conversion. As Farnsworth points out, that is one way that the term "restitution" is used. But that is not the point of the book. Instead, it turns out that the restitution that the book is about is a whole separate category of causes of action on a par with torts and contracts. It turns out I had encountered restitution in this sense in law school classes on torts and on contracts, where there were glances at "unjust enrichment" and "quasi-contract" and "promissory estoppel", but with no comprehensive treatment, or even any recognition that it might be possible to discuss restitution as anything other than a kind of exception to the normal proper way of doing things. As with the Rhetoric book, this one on Restitution divides the subject matter into categories based on the intended effect to be achieved; illustrated with plenty of examples.

Although I am not a lawyer, I am so glad that Mr. Farnsworth wrote this book. Other texts are very philosophical; this book is filled with practical examples illuminating a wide variety of transactions. I literally could not put it down! The legal cases brought in were very apropos. There is a lot of depth here; it will be worth reading & re-reading. Thank you Mr. Farnsworth!

Very comprehensive and highly readable on a complex area of the law.

Lastly, my professors have a booklet of erratas since there are numerous errors in this text.

Perhaps it is fashionable to assemble words into nonsensical sequences and call them stories, but these are not stories. These are wackdoodle mumblings. I am beyond tired with this "I will disturb you with my bizarre thoughts" crap.

Yes, I longed for this book and here it is! I am so glad of it. All the stories, in one sturdy book. I’ve been reading Williams for many years now and it has always seemed to me that they are best read this way, in order. The early stories give a reader a little more to go on, then more and more one is left stranded in midair. It is a delight one learns, I think. The recent stories seem to circle around a bit, provide a little ground again -- but never much!If you are new to Williams, I suggest you read a half dozen of the tiny stories themselves, rather than rely on anyone’s opinion, including mine. I adore to read these stories, to try to read them and fail, to lose my balance again and again. It’s an entirely different experience of reading than most people are accustomed to and it’s an experience I crave. I like very much to hang out in the strange atmosphere the stories create, to let my sensitivity to language be tuned by them.But I have no idea how this translates, in terms of so-called “normal people”! I am admittedly the sort of person who reads Gertrude Stein for fun. I enjoy difficulty, at least in prose. To me, the tiny size of the stories is so inviting. I love to practice paying attention in this way. Or, as I like to joke, If everything is entirely straightforward, how can I be distracted from the wretched condition of my life? I am, in short, a tortured soul. As such, I adore these stories.(If you are contemplating the splurge of purchasing a hardcover, for me a very rare occurrence, I note happily that this is an exceptionally beautiful book. It is just as it should be. The typeface, cover, the sense of space, endpages. The interior of the book was done by Janine Agro, of Soho Press. I’ve never mentioned a book designer in a review before -- but this is utterly beautiful work, done by someone who totally understood that it was crucial how the stories appeared on the page. Bravo.)

I read (in areview i the LA Times) of Diane Williams’s most recent collection of flash fictions (Fine, Fine, Fine, Fine) that they are “gripping.” I did not find any of the stories from the collection of more than 300 “gripping.” I could also argue with Ben Marcus’s introduction, which is longer than any of the “stories” —not funny, not entertaining, not even manic—and too short even to qualify as the other pole of “bipolar.” Those I sampled are long enough for me to be bored by them (singularly and collectively). I don’t think there is any there there. Apparently some other writers do. Perhaps they are better at “reading in.” Though I hoped to like them — was not predisposed to reject them — I found even holding up the 2.2 pounds of the book tiring, and the often odd syntax even more so. Even the titles of the "stories" made me yawn, though they also tend to be very shorts, often a single word.

Two confessions: I had never heard of Diane Williams before reading about this book AND I've never been a big fan of "experimental" fiction.But this sounded too intriguing to ignore, so I didn't... ignore itAnd I'm glad: Ms Williams is an invigorating writer and her output, stories that may or may not be linked and which, individually, do not take up more than two pages (many, most,1 page... some 1 paragraph) are in the main fascinatingIt's nor as singular an achievement as Lake Effect Days, but there's a LOT more of it

The Collected Stories of Diane Williams covers this author's interesting, quirky, shocking, incomprehensible, and remarkable output from 1990 to present. In this nearly 800 page collection, there are 300+ short stories--most 1-2 pages in length--and three novellas, only one of which seems novella, the other two more like longer stories.I thought many of these stories were pure nonsense, but I found quite a few to be remarkable--the author managed to provide a powerful punch, emotion, or jolt with a remarkable dearth of words. I found the longer stories (three or more pages) to be more entertaining than the shorter ones, and generally less bizarre. Many of these stories are in the 5-star range based on quality of the writing and impact. But many are also 1-star due to the lack of what I'd call a story--many read like snippets flung on paper.Overall, it's an interesting, frustrating, and awe inspiring collection. And worth slugging through...over time.

Diane Williams's short -- very, very short -- stories are intriguing, and generally start with a description of something very familiar and mundane and ending with a shocking twist. Like bestiality, incest, murder kind of shocking twist, always thrown in to the narrative as if nothing to be alarmed about. This is not something to be consumed in a single sitting. If you like reading a few pages at a time that will leave you a little disturbed, give this book a try. The stories are a little bit sick and disturbed -- and not always transparent.

These stories are extremely short and sometimes difficult to tackle due to the cadence, structure and perspective. The stories are often just a couple of pages long, so it's tough to analyse the premise or be carried away into the story. That being said, one does find oneself going back to reread and re-experience the short passages in order to reflect on the purpose of the story. While I don't like difficult fiction reads (I want my fiction fun and entertaining as my hard reading is saved for research), I do enjoy short stories.
