I purchased this book as a reward for extra effort in my Sunday school class, and I was really amazed at how good a book it is. For a paperback, this book has a narrow page width, or I suppose you could say the pages have a greater length than typical. The pages are also are not ment to be bent back at the binding, but they have an area a short distance from the binding where the pages are designed to 'bend.' This design for a paperback is new to me, although perhaps some of you are familiar with this. The overall design of the book lends itself well to tables, charts and maps. Most tables fit well in this design, and charts may be reproduced by using adjoining pages to make a larger image. Most maps of Israel are necesarily longer and narrower than other maps you see, so this format works well there as well. The whole thing seemed really modern to me, kind of like wide-screen, but the bottom line is the practicality of it. Now, considering it has most all of the hardcover complete Holman Bible Atlas, then you have quite a handy refernce at a reasonable price with enhanced designed functionality. Don't hesitate on this one. It's a real winner

I am a Bible school teacher in Johannesburg, South Africa and when I read the reviews on this book I just had to have it. Since I live in South Africa and am a Kindle for Mac user, I bought the Kindle version as it is easier and quicker to get a hold of.I am very happy and impressed with my purchase except for one important fact: this book is based mostly on visual material, and I'm sure it is wonderful in the paperback format, but the Kindle version shows very small images which are difficult to read. When one zooms in on the images, almost all resolution is lost and the text cannot be read at all.Please let me know how I can acquire higher resolution versions of these images or is it possible to get a refund for this Kindle book or have the paperback mailed to me in South Africa?

Was not what I was looking for, but it is a nice reference book.

It's been a pleasant surprise to see how a knowledge of the geography of Palestine can illuminate the biblical text. There is context here about why certain events in the Bible happened where they did, and how biblical locations correspond to the modern map of the world. Some history too.Downside is that quality of the pictures isn't that great--not very clear.

This is a great resources to increase your biblical understanding!

I was VERY disappointed with the Kindle version of the text. The charts would be wonderful if they were readable. The scans are low quality and pixilate when they are expanded to full screen view.

I'm half way through reading this atlas. Great maps. Shows elevations very well. Helps you visualize the locations well. So far, information is accurate except for their interpretations of significance of numbers. Based on the first half of this book, highly recommend this as a resource for Bible students.

This is a really truly unique set of oracle cards. It's so much different that any tarot-style or animal spirit or angel cards I've ever used. I'm so glad the creators of this manual/deck have made this!!! It really has helped me with some more SOUL-THEMED questions. Those are the hardest to answer. The guidebook tells you how to ask certain questions and how to ask your own questions. The cards CANNOT be used without the guidebook. The guidebook is a gem, too! Thumb through it thoroughly to understand how it is organized. It even has a suggested list of books to read.I very highly recommend this set, especially if you've outgrown typical tarot/oracle cards and runes.Note: I also suggest The Way of the Tarot: The Spiritual Teacher in the Cards by Jordorowsky. You'll have to purchase separately the cards, Tarot de Marseille. Like this set, the cards and the book must go together. I also really like The Book of Runes and viking runes by Ralph Blum. His book is a really good one.

A fantastic desk. Very original - like nothing else you've probably used. The mythology and cosmology are totally refreshing. Very fun to work with and the book is VERY well done with both lengthy (and brief, when you need them) descriptions.

Cards and artwork are beautiful. Book gives wonderful interpretation of each card.

Every card is so packed full of meaning, wisdom, and guidance. This set still rates 5 stars, both for content and beauty, even though the newer sets that are now shipping no longer have a hardcover book. The book is now softcover, and, disappointingly, omits the handy reference charts that are in the front and back of the hardcover.The cards are *almost* the same in this newer edition. In the older sets, they are a little more vibrant, and the finish is a high gloss, while the newer ones have more of a matte finish.I prefer the packaging of the older set: the book slides out of the side, and a carboard container next to it slides out, and neatly held in that are the cards. The packaging of the new set is not bad, but you do have to slide the cover off; then the book sits on top of a carboard section with a cut-out center for the cards.In short, I would suggest trying to find an older set with the hardcover book, and superior packaging; but the new set is still, overall, quite lovely, and the content is undeniably wonderful. A wise and beautiful oracle.

It's possible the best thing about this book is the cover. It depends on your interests and expectations. This review is intended to encourage due diligence before buying it based on the Best of blurb and trusting Penguin. Like I did.The two main problems beyond the basic orientation are boredom and translation. The haiku are not what you expect, which is the fundamental deconstructionist point of the book. As such, it's interesting, but way too detailed. As a Go player and former art history student I have some minimal Japanese. The book is overkill for most people other than scholars, though it would be useful for students of Japanese.Overkill is fine if the poetry is interesting and the language beautiful. It's neither. Instead we're supposed to marvel at the earthiness and vulgarity and aquire insight into the hidden side of Japan. Except it's not hidden -- look up Shunga, soap girls or Japanese porn on the internet -- it's boring. The haiku, I mean.It's hard to know if this is due to the translation. The translation uses words like Libertarianism and Dandytown. Who knew Basho read Mill? A large part of the haiku in the book are a kind of chain poetry, not the 17 syllable concise form you might expect. It's supposed to be clever and witty, saki drinking poets chaining free association. It reminds me a little of the Dirty Dozens in African-American culture. Or perhaps hip hop. After a while, you get the point and the haiku become repetitive and tedious. It's possible that reading it in the original would maintain your interest. Unfortunately I'll never know. The translation reads like Ali G, but not nearly as funny. It feels off.Do I regret buying the book? My gut says yes, but it's hard to say. I learned some things. But I doubt I'll ever look at it again and I certainly didn't and won't ever read it all the way through.

I pre-ordered this book last spring via Amazon and as soon as it arrived (mid-August) and I'd had a good enough glance to be assured it was the real thing, I placed it on the list of required texts for a course I teach on comparative literature (Chinese and Japanese poetry in English translation). No fatal regrets thus far (still early into the semester), but I suspect that some of the translation-work applied to the cunnilingual & cognates are susceptible to rapid fermentation.

Good luck figuring out the logic behind the selection and ordering of the material. Organization by season, animal, plant, mood, and so forth must apparently seem very old-fashioned and dated to this translator. To enjoy this book, you need to enjoy reading haiku with lots of very crude, explicit slang words regarding urination, defecation, and sexual acts reduced to a kind of giggling school-boy sniggering. So if you like graffiti, billboards, and noisy television commercials, this haiku collection might be just right; otherwise, it's a very unpleasant waste of time and money.

Marvelous collection !! Lots of information about haiku I never knew before. Repartee between poets across the centuries.I am now giving this book as a gift to friends when they evince an interest in haiku.

Adam L. Kern has created a great resource for the haiku knowledge base. His expressions and insights bring on astonishing new perspectives to explicating haiku in several contexts. I love that the social conventions of more modern tastes in haiku are really sanitized as compared to traditional haiku - absolutely fascinating stuff!

if the compiler is 17yr under with high school education I've give him 5+ stars for his effort. But the compiler is Harvard Literature grad so I must come here to give him Zero Star because:1) The Compiler shows no professionalism to his study, Why?!this book of haikus compiled not buy chronological order, nor alphabetical nor subject matter nor any order?! How readers can learn and enjoy and understand the Art Development and history of this Art?!2) It seems the compiler purposely arranges poems this way so it serves some kind of his own aesthetic point that's pointless to grasp for anyone.3) So arrogant, arrogance becomes stupidity. that don't serve his work, no respect to the poet masters he serve, no respect to the readers who pick up this book, no respect to his time and the publisher who trusts him could spend time and effort to deliver a thing's worth it.I am so angry about how this book poems arranged, not because I paid $16 for it, I spent my important weekend 2 hours on the weekend construction schedule commute to get this book, and when I start to read this, I almost went nuts! actually I went nuts! that's why I am posting dam vicious comment about his Harvard graduate author. what A Horrible Job!

The way she demonstrates how to gradually amp up both physical and emotional intensity is clear and effective. I plan to re-read this gem frequently.

If you've ever thought you'd like to write a romance, this is THE book for you. Ms. Lieske uses one of her published novels to show the who, what, where, why, and how to successfully write in this genre. (two books in one!) Excellent and enlightening lessons on how to build from the initial attraction, first kiss, and the ups and downs of conflict to arrive at the happily-ever-after. I had a lot of, "oh, wow," moments while reading this book. I can't wait to write my next romance novel and use what I've learned.

I found so much helpful information in here. So often I read books on writing and it feels redundant, but as a sweet romance writer, it's tough to get such specific information. I especially appreciated Victorine's explanation of the one to ten levels of emotional and physical connection. She did a wonderful job explaining her process of methodically pushing characters together, having an action/reaction cycle and then having them pull back each time. It was a concept I understood, but it was always a bit fuzzy. But Victorine's explanation and examples from her book were crisp and easy to grasp. I had so many aha moments while reading this book. It was so eye opening for me and I feel like my sweet romance books are going to be so much better after reading this book.

If I could give this book ten stars I would. So many light bulbs went off in my head while reading this. So many writing guides tell you to do this and that. Build conflict into every scene for example. but no one can honestly tell you how to do that. Victorine makes things so much clearer and to use her own book was just brilliant. Now I was able to understand conflict tension and how this all plays in writing a novel. I got so many ideas for my own book when I read it.Thank you so much this!!!!!!!!

I walked away with a lot of ahh moments after reading this book. Although I don't presently write in this genre, I was impressed with the author's method of writing. She made me want to write a sweet romance. Highly recommended.

There is so much great information in this book. I love how the author walks you through an actual romance and explains how she builds story and anticipation for the reader. Really, it is two books in one...win-win! I know the description of tropes used in romance will be very useful for any romance writer, whether for a primary or secondary plot line. Highly recommend!

If you want a step by step look at the craft and inner workings of a successful sweet romance, this book has it all! You'll read about what the ingredients are and then see the breakdown of one of the author's novels. She shares what she was doing and why throughout the novel, interjecting her author notes as you read. Highly recommend this for sweet romance authors!

If you want to know how to write a romance novel this book is great. Victorine explains what readers are looking for, then demonstrates how to deliver. I've read several of her books for pleasure,now I'm going to go back and read them again as reference material.

After reading Wild Magic, I decided to go back and read the beginnings before I proceeded with the rest of that series. I had been reluctant to read the Song of the Lioness series because some of the reviews I’d read indicated that the series was for teenage girls. Maybe so. I can see how it’s a great introduction to fantasy for teens. But, I’m a 65 year old man who’s thoroughly enjoyed the 2 Tamara Pierce novels I’ve read! She’s a good storyteller. The characters are engaging and well drawn. The fact that it’s such an easy read doesn’t detract from the enjoyment at all.

She is easy to root for, as are the supporting characters, from knights-in-training to princes to thieves.The “Alanna books,” as they’re described in my household, are a staple in any young girl’s literary path to maturity. Tamora Pierce has created an absorbing world with irresistible characters. Feminism was never a cornerstone of my adolescence, and I still loved the Alanna books more than life itself. I can only imagine how much more I would have treasured them if I’d identified with the gender discrimination Alanna faces.If you like to root for the underdog, if you feel a kindred connection to women empowerment stories, if you are drawn to the Middle Ages fantasy world, if you enjoy adventure and suspense and secrets and magic and—Just read the Alanna books. My copies are worn, torn, and tattered. I first read them when I was Alanna’s age, and I’ve probably read each of them thirty times over the past fifteen years. Of all the books of my pre-teen years, these are the most memorable.The books are sold separately, and the only disappointment is the redone cover illustrations in the re-released versions. My copies have the original drawings of the mass market paperbacks published in the 1980s. You can try to find them, and you can also buy all four books together in an Amazon set.

I'm not gonna lie I have read all of the lioness quartet 10 times over ever since I was introduced to the series as a child, I beat my physical copies to death at how much I read them and they got lost in a move when I was older. I am reminded how much I loved the adventures of Alanna and all her friends and I am so giddy to finish this series and move on to all the others I got e-book form.If you have a little girl do her a favor and buy this series, because if Alanna I felt like I could do anything that boys could do but I can do it better!

My personal recommendation would be The Immortals Series.This one my all-time favorite book series. I got my first copies when I was teenager (somewhere between 12 and 14? I don't really remember, it's been a while - I'm 29 now) from my mom because she loved them she was younger and thought I would too. This is an old series, first published in 1983 and it's still fantastic! I re-read my copies every few years and purchased this newest edition recently for the daughter of a friend who loves fantasy and adventure books as much as I do. I wanted her to have her own copy that she could treasure as much as I've treasured mine all these years.

I first picked up this novel as a teenager. Now I finally have my own hardback copy! This book had me hooked in the first few chapters. I knew I wanted to be just like Alanna when I grew up! She is a very strong character who you really grow to respect. You must read this series!!

I was an avid reader as a youth, and burned through as much in this genre as I could. But, as a boy, I always steered clear of anything focused on girls, heroines etc. Fast forward a few decades and I have a daughter. So now I find myself catching up on YA (young adult) fiction, trying to have a bunch or recommendations for my girl.This was a friend's recommendation and I just read it this weekend (well this and the follow up, now I'm on the third book of the quartet. I think this is a great book for young women. (Tweens I'd guess, but whenever their reading level gets here.) The story line is one of a girl who does not want her biology to shape her destiny. There are clear hurdles to being a knight as she wishes, and the book does a fair job of pointing out the difficulties of the central character who by dint of personal effort slowly but surely learns to stand on her own two feet.
