Review

Evolution 2.0 is a remarkably meticulous dissection of the experimental evidence on evolution. Forget the dogmatic Neo-Darwinist assumption that new species originated only through gradual accumulation of random mutations. Weismann and Wallace were demonstrably wrong and their theory needs to be replaced with an integrative synthesis. Perry Marshall and I have entered this debate from entirely different fields. He starts from information theory and practice, I started from research on the heart's pacemaker, but we have come to almost identical conclusions. —Denis Noble, Oxford University, Fellow of the Royal Society of Great Britain and author of "Dance to the Tune of Life: Biological Relativity" “Evolution 2.0 is clearly the best book I have read on the topic. It helped me far better understand the fallacy of random mutations and how they are really introduced. This is something I was never taught in genetics in undergrad or medical school.” —Joseph Mercola, M.D., New York Times bestselling author of The No-Grain Diet and Effortless Healing   Evolution 2.0 is engaging, thought-provoking, and challenges us to ‘reboot’ the riddle of evolutionary biology. By re-examining Darwin, Marshall asks us to reconsider the most important question we face—what is life?—Dr. John S. Torday, professor, Evolutionary Medicine Program, UCLA There can be few topics that have generated as much misunderstanding in the entangled relationship between science and religion as the origin and evolution of life. It is remarkable that we seem to know more about the origin of the universe than we do about the origin of life. In contrast to much previous emphasis on life as replicating systems, Perry Marshall brings new insight into the concept of life as information management. Drawing on his background as an electrical engineer, he asks how code can arise spontaneously. He describes his own 10-year journey in pursuit of this question, challenging much of what he had learnt from traditional accounts of the process of evolution by natural selection. The result is a fresh account which stands up to scrutiny and challenges many generally held positions. If you want to read a book that will stimulate you to rethink evolution, read this.-Andrew Briggs, Oxford University; Author, The Penultimate Curiosity "Marshall writes in a practical style so that all of his readers can come to understand evolution and can make a thoughtful conclusion on a controversial topic. Recommended for . . . students of biology, history of science, and religious studies, as well as researchers and scholars."—Library Journal“Standing on the knife-edge between traditional evolutionary theory and Intelligent Design, this book will inflame both dogmatic Darwinists and Creationists. It’s irritating to both because it’s friendly to the idea of evolution itself, and because it judges Darwinism too close-minded and reductive. . . . While most scientists submit to self-censorship and dare not question cherished assumptions, the boldest scientists like Albert Einstein, Francis Crick and Stephen Hawking never feared such taboos. Whether agnostics, atheists or believers, they never shrank back from big questions or unconventional solutions. Evolution and design are not either-or, but both-and.”—Jean-Claude Perez, author, Codex Biogenesis and retired IBM Biomathematics and Artificial Intelligence Interdisciplinary Researcher“Marshall is making an invaluable contribution toward more open and honest discussion on the subject of evolution versus creation. The book is well written, often witty, and is extremely thought provoking. . . . It is amazing that this ‘non-biologist’ has analyzed life phenomena at the cellular and molecular levels to such depth and width by applying information gained by cutting-edge methods in the life sciences!”—Dr. Kwang Jeon, Editor, International Review of Cell and Molecular Biology, and Professor Emeritus, Department of Biochemistry, University of Tennessee“Any person of faith who cares about how creation reveals God—and how evolution is actually a devastating arsenal of evidence against atheism—should add Evolution 2.0 to the extreme tippy-top of their reading list. Evolution 2.0 is equally shocking to both atheists and Christians, a genuine eye-opener in a category of its own.”—D. Bnonn Tenant, ThinkingMatters.org.nz“A very readable book and a devastating attack on the neo-Darwinist orthodoxy that evolution is nothing but natural selection acting on random variation.”—Peter Saunders, co-director, Institute of Science in Society, and Emeritus professor of Applied Mathematics, King’s College, London“With considerable wit and amazing insight, Marshall delivers a compelling and forceful synthesis that sets a new standard for discussions about the relationship between science and faith. The result is no less than astonishing.”—Mark McMenamin, Professor of Geology, Mount Holyoke College“The book is wonderfully thought-provoking, as Perry brings a fresh perspective to the increasingly arid (and acrimonious) debate between Intelligent Design and methodological naturalism.”—Crofton Brierley, MS Biochemistry, Oxford University, former department head, Marconi Optical“A remarkable and useful resume of the state-of-the-art of this great problem of science.”—Stuart Pivar, author, Lifecode and On The Origin of Form, and cofounder, New York Academy of Art“I am committed to Young Earth Creationism, and thus cannot agree with some of Perry's conclusions. However, I highly recommend this book to any skeptic who is committed to a purely materialistic paradigm. The science presented here - from the latest research to the most engaging minds on this subject—make this the one book you should read.”—Ray Glinski, MS in Biochemistry, Pastor at Grace Church of DuPage“Evolution 2.0 is a modern philosophical marvel unlike anything I have read in my years of study. It allowed me to put down my guard. The author was not compelling me to believe in an ideology, but rather taking me alongside his journey of self-discovery. I came into this book hesitant. As a staunch creationist I found myself trying to fight with Marshall early on, but his arguments and presentation were flawless and compelling. It was refreshing to see someone examine both sides honestly.”—Marie Sarantakis, Comparative Religion Scholar, Carthage College “Armed with computer science and electrical engineering, Perry fights an uphill battle to unite the space between those who believe evolution is random and those who believe species are designed by God, who in some cases deny evolution itself. . . . Judge this book by the science within its pages—and enjoy the story.”—Andras Pellionisz, Biophysicist, Founder of Fractogene; PhD, Computer Technology, PhD, Biology, PhD, Physics“Sometimes the only way a puzzle gets solved is when someone looks at it with fresh eyes. Perry Marshall is an engineer who started to investigate biology. His book could signal a paradigm shift in the battle between Darwinian evolution and creation/ID. Maybe the war is over. Respond, criticize and debate it . . . just don't dismiss it.”—Justin Brierley, host, Unbelievable? radio program and podcast

From the Author

No one is indifferent to the question of "Creation-Evolution." Everyone wants to know. When I explain the discoveries in this book to people of all walks of life, they're immediately fascinated. Yes, even at dinner parties.I presented this at a secular business function in Chicago. Afterward, person after person thanked me for resolving, in one woman's words, "this ridiculous conflict between science and religion." (She happened to be a Buddhist.) Others thanked me for revealing science no one else bothered to tell them. One entrepreneur, an owner of a multi-million dollar company, borrowed ideas from nature and re-invented his business.Recently I gave evolution / intelligent design talks to two different conservative Christian home school groups. Both times, the organizers were besieged beforehand with hand-wringing emails from concerned parents, wondering what I was about to teach their kids. Most embraced creationism and were wary. But afterwards, nothing but gratitude. An eager group of parents and kids stayed for two hours after, hammering me with curious questions.Contrary to what Creationists always told you, evolution is not a hoax. Scientists engineer new species in the lab at breathtaking speed every day. The mystery behind this is the cell's spectacular ability to produce and modify code.Contrary to what Darwinists always told you, evolution is not steered by blind mutations. Rather it is fueled by the ability for nearly every cell in existence to cut, splice, re-arrange and re-engineer its own DNA.They do this in direct response to hundreds of inputs from their changing environment. This book is the first to explain the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis in language regular people can understand. The new paradigm is a far more complete formulation of evolution that rejects numerous pillars of old-school Darwinism, including randomness and gradualism. Life evolves in real time and new generations benefit immediately from their parents' adaptations. To get to the bottom of this mystery, I've formed an investment group, Natural Code LLC. We are offering a technology prize for Origin of Information. The prize caps at ten million dollars. It seeks a material answer to the question: "How do you get a non-living, non-programmed system to organize a sequence of predictive choices - machine-building instructions like 1 0 0 0 1 1 0 - without a designer?" This problem is trickier than it first appears.Origin of life demands an answer to this question; meanwhile, cells do this every day... but how do they do it?Every technology innovation we seek has already been solved in the cell, we just need to study it.This book bridges the gap between two opposing sides (creationism and Darwinism), each of which told you less than half the story. This book shatters traditional boundaries between science and religion, showing the way to new medical and technological breakthroughs. As this book has come to fruition, many people have come out of the woodwork, expressing almost identical frustrations at how both extremes in the debate have ceased looking for answers, and only push their tired dogmas. The task of discovery is never done. My dream for this book is that it will usher in a 2nd Renaissance of curiosity, wonder and exploration about the universe we are part of.

If you only read one book on evolution, this is the one.Best part was metaphors between DNA code to word processor and software.Unique book. Most evolution books are unipolar with univ guys saying "random mutations," and the ID guys saying "intelligent designer" like opposite crowds in a beer commercial (tastes great, less filling). This book goes way beyond that with explanations of mechanisms to generate genetic variety including endosymbiosis (flagella, chloroplasts, mitochondria), horizontal (lateral) gene transfer with plasmids, transposons, retrotransposons, retroviruses, epigenetics etc.I majored in evol biology in college and have read numerous books on evol so I'm familiar with the controversies. A biologist said to me, "Why you reading a book by an engineer? What does he know about biology?"Perry Marshall's engineering and programming background and brilliant mind have enabled him to understand DNA and DNA editing better than biologists.

Author (and computer scientist/engineer) Perry Marshall wrote in the Introduction of this 2015 book, “Everything we know from computer science provokes a huge question: ‘How do you get a code without a coder?’ … ‘How can code write itself?’ These questions challenge the boundaries of science and religion.” (Pg. xxii) He goes on, “As I distanced myself from the extremes, I found myself reading more scientific papers and fewer popular books and websites… That science is what this book is about.” (Pg. xxiv)He explains, “This is not a religious book… This is a science book, provoked by my burning question: If blind evolutionary forces can produce eyes and hands and ears and millions of species, then why don’t engineers use Darwinian evolution to design cars or write software?... Rather than brushing aside ‘ultimate questions,’ the new discoveries I was making only served to intensify and reframe ancient questions that lie at the boundary between science and religion. Where did life come from? Where do we get our ability to think and choose? In this book you’ll discover vital principles from the information sciences that neatly explain why… Darwinism is still plagued with problems, never able to silence its critics… You’ll also find that the Creationists and ID advocates leave out vital parts of the story: Darwinists underestimate nature, and Creationists underestimate God.” (Pg. xxiv-xxv)He adds, “In this book, I offer a … brand new paradigm for biology. I will show you that scientists create new species in the lab every day, and I’ll show you how they do it. I’ll also demonstrate that to the extent science can prove anything, science proves design in DNA. In other words, I’ll prove that BOTH SIDES, the Creationists and the Darwinists, are right.” (Pg. xxvi)He recalls, “I realized … [that] my belief in God was connected to my sense that the cosmos and the human body itself could not possibly be here without a Designer… My drive came from the belief that there had to be some fort of mathematical formula or underlying foundation that would demonstrate the possibilities of evolution, and show its limitations… the remaining force that kept me from sliding into atheism was my engineering instincts… I was going to let science and engineering answer this question for me.” (Pg. 6-7)He notes, “I never found a radiation mutation experiment that definitively produced a useful new feature that wasn’t already there. I hunted for a Darwinian explanation for this… Strangely, I could not find one… In later chapters, you’ll see many fascinating experiments where new mechanisms do develop in the lab---fast… However, radiation-induced mutations always appear to be neutral and usually harmful… Could that mean that when fruit flies adapt, they don’t transform through random copying errors, but instead by some other mechanism?... I needed to find out.” (Pg. 33-34)He observes, “Yes, there is surely some vanishingly small number of beneficial mutations that were generated by random accidental copying errors. But there’s no way to be certain they were random… In other words, one scientifically untestable theory (‘an intelligent designer created new species’) has bene duking it out with another scientifically untestable theory (‘the mutations that create new species are random and accidental’). It is impossible for science to validate either assertion. So our deadlock between Darwin and Design shouldn’t be all that surprising.” (Pg. 75)He explains, “If you major in biology, you will eventually study Transposition… I found there are two versions of evolution: There’s real-world evolution practiced by scientists and medical researchers. And there’s a largely fake, dumbed-down version that they bicker about in bookstores and Kansas school board meetings… Transposition, it turned out, was just the teeny, tiny top of a huge iceberg. Transposition may be the most common system of evolutionary development, but it’s not the only one. And every single one of these mechanisms is modular, contextual, and follows formulaic patterns.” (Pg. 91)He suggests, “Are cells sentient? I truly do not know the answer… Perhaps it’s not a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer. Perhaps living things have various degrees of self-awareness… Evolution is ultimately driven by cells’ desire to multiply, to fill the Earth, to use every available resource to its maximum potential, and to populate every ecological niche with fantastic beauty and diversity.” (Pg. 112)He outlines 5 evolutionary processes: “1. Epigenetics; 2. Transposition; 3. Horizontal Gene Transfer; 4. Hybridization; 5. Symbiogenesis… And what happens when we combine Transposition (cells rearranging their own DNA), Horizontal Transfer (cells exchanging DNA), Epigenetics (organisms passing acquired traits to offspring through cells switching DNA sequences on and off), and Symbiogenesis (organisms merging together) with Genome Duplication (two species merging to form a third)?... we can in principle get from any one spot on the tree of life to any other. Also remember the retrovirus… which leads to organisms borrowing code from code inserted into the virus’ own DNA… Most important, what we’ve learned about Evolution 2.0 is: *It’s not slow or gradual; it’s fast. *It’s not accidental; it’s organized. *It’s not purposeless; it’s adaptive. *Natural selection isn’t the star of the show; natural Genetic Engineering is.” (Pg. 144) He summarizes, “Evolution 2.0 is… the cell’s capacity to adapt and to generate new features and new species by engineering its own genetics in real time.” (Pg. 145)He wonders, “Do cells read their DNA?... Might they have the ability to locate advantageous instructions from other cells’ DNA and add those instructions to their own genome? If so, then organisms would evolve their bodies by evolving their FNA language first. How might they ‘know’ how to do this? Currently our understanding of this is very limited. However, we are beginning to clearly see what cells do.” (Pg. 169)He concludes, “All this further persuaded me that all we presently know about Origin of Life clearly infers a designer. I cam to this conclusion because of the utter absence of any chemical explanation for Origin of Information. The logical inference was: (1) The pattern in DNA is a code, (2) all the codes whose origin we know are designed, so (3) therefore we have every reason to believe DNA is designed. None of the thousands of people I interacted with offered hard evidence to support any other explanation.” (Pg. 194)He admits, “I’d been raised a young Earth Creationist, and had initially been inoculated against these fascinating truths. I had to grow up and embrace a more nuanced understanding of God and nature.” (Pg. 248) He continues, “I had to outgrow my youthful notions of God. The six-day Creationist God I grew up with gave way to a richer conception of the Divine, that of a master programmer who would spin a strand of code that fills the whole Earth with beauty… The God I imagined as a child yielded to one who weaves a complex story, a story not just for children but for adults, a grand epic tale. A God who invested himself into that tale by creating human beings in his image… One who beckons us to live in the tension of paradox and mystery.” (Pg. 265)This is a creative approach to creation/evolution issues, that will be of great interest to those studying such matters.

Mr. Marshall puts forward advances in biology that few people are aware of. School board members really need to read this because they are, by and large, authorizing the teaching of ancient history in a field that has moved ahead scientifically into the 21 century. How many young people have been discouraged from entering a field they were taught was based on randomness and therefore uncontrollable when all the time there are great strides just waiting to be made.Young people today are brighter than ever, yet are denied the excitement of discovery by the "good old boys club" in science that doesn't want to disturb the status quo. Read this book...open your eyes...and do something about it!That's my opinion.

I have always had trouble with Evolution, but it started with Coppedge's "Evolution Possible or Impossible?" which I think is 5 decades old by now, which simply asked how the entire system could appear ex nihilo.Marshall has both simplified the problem and shown what would have to be proven. It is not the system that is impossible, but the core of the system - a code with encoder and decoder. While getting to this key insight and cutting through the fog of arguments on both sides, he takes us on a quick tour of current genetics and related biology where cells do adapt and "evolve", but by pre-existing mechanisms which aren't random, but by cutting and pasting, disabling, enabling, or duplicating code.

I have been following the logic of Darwinists and neo-Darwinists for decades. This is the first time I've been convinced that there is enough real science to take macroevolution seriously. If you read this book, you might have a paradigm shift. Wonderfully thought-provoking and fun to read.

Perry Marshall exposes proven scientific facts about the remarkable power of adaptation built into all living creatures. Furthermore this books completely debunks Darwinian evolution with hardcore undeniable scientific proof. A must read for anyone questioning the origin of life.

An eye opening book. Evolution that fits better than what we are being taught. Thought provoking for anyone with an open mind. Explained well, not over my head.

From School Library Journal

Gr 10 Up{amp}mdash;Hannah Gold knows that there has been a terrible misunderstanding. She spent an enjoyable several weeks at a college summer program in California, where she formed a tight friendship with her roommate, Agnes. Now she is being carefully monitored and denied basic privileges at a high security institution. While she goes through the events of the past few weeks in her head, she tries to make sense of the tragic accident that sent Agnes falling two stories to the concrete below their dorm window. Although Hannah had been secretly seeing Agnes's boyfriend, Jonah, she knows that she would never have done anything to harm Agnes physically. Through conversations with her therapist, brief interactions with other inmates, and constant internal dialogue, Hannah analyzes her privileged childhood as an only child of wealthy parents in New York City, and wonders if she is not the person she always thought she was. Sheinmel creates an intensely likable unreliable narrator. Hannah's voice is convincingly realistic, highlighting the subtle nuances that make up the thought processes of a troubled teenager. Though the novel centers on the theme of mental illness and its devastating consequences, it is fully engaging and manages to avoid being too gloomy. The author's beautiful prose strikes a perfect balance between serious emotion and humorous dialogue. VERDICT A thrilling page-turner and worthy choice for high school libraries.{amp}mdash;Karin Greenberg, Manhasset High School, Manhasset, NY

Great book got my attention right off the bat

my granddaughter wanted this book for her birthday

Hannah is locked up, Four walls, one window, one door but no way out. She is " A Danger to Herself and Others" , has been deemed so by a doctor , and must stay in the institution until she is evaluated and has an opportunity to explain herself in court. She knows she doesn't belong here, it was all an accident, a mistake, her roommate fell, that's all., and once she convinces the therapist, and the judge, she'll be able to go back to her real life, surviving her senior year in high school and preparing for college. Isolated and angry, she is not at all welcoming to Lucy, the new girl who shares her room at the institution, but soon she is using her charm and persuasive skills to make a new best friend, one who may be able to help her get what she wants- her freedom. This is an excellent contemporary YA book, with great, if unlikeable characters, especially the narrator Hannah, who is the definition of an unreliable narrator, ready to spin every story to her own advantage , determined to make everyone like her, and completely unwilling to take responsibility for anything . The claustrophobic setting really adds to the feeling of tension and isolation that permeates the book, almost all of the story takes place within the institution, with some flashbacks to the events that led to Hannah ending up there , and the author does an incredible job of portraying how trapped Hannah feels, almost to the point that I started to feel a little uncomfortable while reading. It's very difficult to say much more without spoiling the book , and it would be a shame to do that, as it is easily one of the best books I have read in quite some time. It's powerful, tense, surprising, uncomfortable and at times heartbreaking ,and I cannot recommend it highly enough.I read and reviewed an ARC courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are my own.

A Danger to Herself and Others by Alyssa B. Sheinmel is an intriguing young adult novel.Seventeen year old Hannah Gold is certain she has been placed in a mental institution by mistake. She had nothing to do with her roommate and friend Agnes Smith’s accidental fall out of a window. But Agnes’ parents are convinced she is guilty of harming their daughter, so a judge orders Hannah into an institution for further evaluation. At first, Hannah refuses to discuss anything of value with her therapist, Dr. Lightfoot. However, the arrival of her roommate Lucy Quintana is a turning point for Hannah as she finally realizes that in order to earn “privileges”, she has to be honest with Dr. Lightfoot. With Hannah divulging the events that occurred in the weeks preceding Agnes’s accident, Dr. Lightfoot makes a shocking diagnosis that completely upends Hannah’s view of herself. And with the hearing into her role in what happened to Agnes and Hannah’s reunion with her parents fast approaching, is she prepared for how everyone will react to her unexpected diagnosis?Hannah is an extremely intelligent, high achieving only child. Her parents have always treated her as an adult, so she is quite mature and very composed. Hannah is very fixated on not falling behind in school but Dr. Lightfoot wants her to concentrate on her therapy. Initially, Hannah is positive that she did not harm Agnes, but after she is placed under observation, self-doubts begin to creep in. But why would she have wanted to harm her best friend?Lucy’s arrival provides Hannah with a distraction from her own problems. The two girls hit it off fairly quickly and they are soon swapping stories and finding ways to pass the time. Once Hannah realizes Lucy has earned privileges that provide her with a modicum of freedom, she becomes more open with Dr. Lightfoot. But will her gradual self-awareness prepare Hannah for the doctor’s diagnosis?A Danger to Herself and Others is a thought-provoking young adult novel with a somewhat unreliable narrator. The majority of the story takes place mainly in Hannah’s room at the institution so it is easy for readers to empathize with her as she tries to come to terms with her current situation. Despite a bit of repetition, the storyline is interesting and the characters are relatively well-developed. Hannah comes across as a typical teenager, so Dr. Lightfoot’s diagnosis will catch readers off guard. Alyssa B. Sheinmel deftly handles the subject of mental illness with sensitivity and provides insight into a misunderstood disease. An engaging young adult novel that I recommend to older teen and adult readers.I received a complimentary copy for review.

It's really difficult to write a spoiler free review of this book, so rather than focus on the story elements I'm going to focus on my thoughts and feelings as a reader.First, could it be any creepier? I love the unreliable narrator aspect - and I've rarely seen it executed this well. Hannah is very easy for me to connect and sympathize with. She has a lot of anxiety and coping mechanisms in place throughout the book that honestly seem pretty reasonable. Counting steps? Sure. Not hurting anyone by counting steps. I think that's why I was so blown away by the book. We see everything through Hannah's perspective and she's a worthy narrator. The masterful storytelling is something that has me really excited to share "A Danger to Herself and Others" with my readers. April Henry fans will devour this book. Heck, I would read it again! (And I'm known for NOT re-reading books.) It's suspenseful, nothing comes out of left field without justification, and just...beautiful. Beautifully written. Finally, that ending... I wanted to pull Hannah to me and hug her myself. Her parents were so distant and aloof that I could barely stand it. The author doesn't cave to my need to know Hannah is going to be alright. She lets it dangle in front of me without succumbing to the trend to put a pretty bow on every ending - especially when dealing with mental illness. I am thrilled that this book is in my library's collection and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Its another 5star for one of my favorite authors. Madison never disappoints with her books. They are hot, you need a fan and a Do Not Disturb sign. If you havent read any of her books before, then you need to pick up these books and get to reading. This book was amazing. I could not put it down until I finished reading it. I definitely recommend this book to anyone who is looking to read it and aren’t sure if they want to. Trust me, you will love it.I voluntarily read an Advanced Reading Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Well I love most her books and the sex but this book was 90 percent sex not much contents. I found myself skipping or skimming through the sex.

this was a good read but very similar to another one I read. it was sexy and enjoyable but I liked the other..sugar and spice better

The writers need to start proofreading their work. Is "Isabella" a Winters or a Wilder? Is it Summer in Paris? At Christmas ?Really?

Hot and sexy with a dark twist. I did find some spots distracting with editing issues but beyond that. ..

Good

Interesting love story with a similar ending as all of the older man and younger women loving each other. Love is good.

Wow! That was hot, hot, hot! And of course, the sweet happily ever after that I am always a sucker for :)

Pictures were great. The size and shape of the book was so unique! perfect for the subject matter!

NEW YORK by Christopher Bliss is a "must have" for all that hold NYC dear to their hearts. Chris has epitomized the essence of the New York experience through his lens in a way that makes you want to keep going back for more, to either the City, itself, or the book. Although his colour work is excellent, the black and whites truly bring out the talent that this photographer has in composition, point of view, and subject matter. Chris has found just the right mix of locations, both familiar and obscure, to share with us. Additionally, his pictures seem to capture the emotional aspect that one feels when, say, crossing Broadway in the early morning, or strolling through Central Park on a winter day. I strongly recommend this book to any and all who have an affinity for the Big Apple.

Christopher Bliss is a photographer who understands architectural landscapes and probably few other photographers have been able to capture the spectrum of styles, changes, majesty, and assembled mass as Bliss. This book is simply images. Yes there is a brief but poignant introduction by Susan Bliss, PhD suggesting why new York is unique among the cities of the world and myriad reasons why this is so (in five languages), but the remainder of the portfolio is devoted to the visual impact that New York has made on Christopher Bliss. The images are in both crystalline black and white and full color and it become obvious that there is an unwritten narrative in progress as the book opens with views of the Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi 1885 sculpture, The Statue of Liberty, a gift of appreciation from France to the United States that continues to stand boldly as a welcoming beacon of promise to the immigrants of the world. From there Bliss takes us through the noise of the city, with images of rushing people and cars accompanying the slowly elevated view of the superstructures above the level of the land. From both aerial shots to image composed on the ground Bliss manages to highlight the extraordinary museum of architecture the city presents to the viewer, calling our attention to periods of style in design and building art that walking the sidewalks fails to unveil. The bridges, the parks, the waterways, the park benches of people, the little stores, the vistas of the entire skyline, the images of the arts institutions, photographs by day and by night - rarely have we been so fortunate to see this much of the megalopolis. But in addition to the sheer grandeur of the special place named New York, NY Christopher manages to insert the human vantage, making this monograph invitingly personal as well as being a profound survey of urban architectural history.
