This is a worthwhile read for someone who has been playing the game a while. A real newbie may have trouble because you'll need to know poker jargon. But the title is wrong here, which is unfortunate for the reader and the author. It should surely have been something more like "Exploiting your opponents' tendencies" or "Strategies for Beating Small Stakes Poker" (i.e., leaving out the word "Tournaments") because tournaments are hardly even mentioned here. So folks looking for cash game advice might miss skip this title when it is actually VERY useful for cash games. And those looking for tournament advice will be disappointed to find nothing here that is specific to tournament play. That said, the book is really worth reading because he covers the topic of exploiting player styles in a remarkably small volume of words and does so in a conversational style that many readers will find appealing. The organization of the material is by player types as opposed to so many books that organize by the street on which action is being considered. Some readers may balk that they can't just open the book and find the pages that talk about pre-flop play or river play, but that is really the essence of the message. You shouldn't play any street in a particular way all the time. Who you face on that street is far too important. But if you were looking for tournament advice on such topics as varying your opening hand selection based on the stack-to-blinds ratio of both you and your opponents in the hand, or varying tactics late in the tournament based on ICM concerns, or short-handed and final table play, you just won't find any of that here. For that, you may as well start with (Dan) "Harrington On Modern Tournament Poker." It's more than ten times longer than this book so be prepared to invest some time. But for boning up on strategy in a hurry, it's hard to beat this little gem. You could read it "cover to cover" in just a few hours the day before you go back to the casino after an extended absence and it would serve you well - in cash games and tournaments.
Having read almost all of Phil Gordons books, read almost all of Dan Harringtons, one by Helmuth, Negreanu, others, I expected a bit more out of this. It isnt all that much of an addition to anything, more like a little pocket guide with tips. Its not very long, and just really didnt come away with it being all that helpful in MY game. Bit to generic and simplified. More beginner to almost ready for a decent tourney. Small stakes is what.. $25 ?? or $250..?? you will see some players in nearly any game in Vegas, and local Pros hunt these modest tournies to make a living. $400-700 1st places draws in the regulars, as does the $2000-3000 1st place monies in the $125-150 tournies. So I guess its actually hard to describe as I just didnt really read anything I didnt already know. I am no pro, or expert, but have been playing for about 11 yrs, read as I said a LOT of books, HIGHLY recommend ALL of Phil Gordons " Little XXXXX Book" books. Beginner to near expert, I love his books..Dan Harringtons "Harrington on Hold'em" 3 book series is another must read. This book ?? Meh.... if you are decent enough now to win an occasional tourney, and do so with some consistency ( talking Vegas sized tourneys, fields of 20-200 people, ranging from $50 to $250 ), you dont need this book..If you are trying to get an edge, as you bust out to often, need some quick pointers without deep strategies and mathematics involved, take a peek. otherwise,, not much between the covers..
I bought this book since it was at the top of the list on a couple lists on poker sites. I was extremely disappointment that for just under the $18 I paid, I was getting content that is found online in blogs, freely available. It is self published, 80 page. However the 80 pages has a lot of empty margin space which would probably (in terms of words) is about a single blog post you find on something like pokernews or pokerbank. First 60 or so pages talk about 4 player types, Loose passive, Loose Aggresive, Tight Passive and Tight Aggressive.. with just basic strategies you read anywhere.Don't purchase it if you at all have any idea or even a little about poker. It's probably worth $0 since you can find it online just about everywhere.
A really good book. Johnathan Little seems to breakdown his focus.....one focus per book...(At least in the books I have read so far). What makes him stand out is his very original way of thinking. The books are not meaty.....and lack depth, but they more then make up for that with original thinking and out of the box concepts. As an intermediate player I have found his books very interesting because they challenge my tight aggressive stance.....with a very clear explanation of the benefits of playing loose aggressive. I confess I looked down at the LAG players but I have been experimenting with learning to play a loose aggressive style. I used his style of play in a tournament I have played in literally hundreds of times....always just making it past the bubble and then running out of chips. To my surprise I won the tournament. This book matches up well with Crushing Small Stakes Cash Poker by the same author. I am not sure the LAG is a good fit for me.....but I have still followed his guidelines, as an experiment.....and have learned a lot about the LAG style of play.
