This book isn't perfect but it puts you straight in the middle of Renaissance Italy, to the point where you're roaming its chaotic streets, haggling in the marketplace, and praying you'll survive the tussles between the apprentices and the servants. That said, the one thing that could have been better is creating depth in the characters. It simply isn't consistent. Still I highly recommend it for some fantastic time traveling through Italy.
I had to read this for a project and enjoyed the book much more than I thought I would
Very good story. Very well written.
good
Leonardo's Shadow attempts to recreate late 15th century Milan peopled with 20th century insolent brats and masters who had never understood the servant-master relationship. While Christopher Grey does try to bring into the scene some aspects of Renaissance life, the actions of the characters totally disrupt the concept of life during the Renaissance. The characters from the Duke to Leonardo to the priests and on down to the hero-servant,Giacomo, show that personal relationships during the Renaissance were not understood by the author. Furthermore, the first chapter with its repeated running leitmotif, seems to be a copy of Jerry Spinelli style and especially the first chapter of Milkweed. Choose instead some of the fine non-fiction books on the Renaissance and on Leonardo da Vinci--Amazon has several such books.
This book was exciting at the beginning, but began to drag midway through. It picked up towards the end. Leonardo da Vinci is such an interesting figure, more could have been included about his life.
Read this along with a kI'd studying it in school and quite enjoyed it!!!! :)
its extremely well written, so that it stays interesting for my son to read. When the classtri^p went to Florence it made more sense than just learning about the renaissance by visiting museums
