I have read this book several times now.. I have some background in SERE.. I graduated in Class 72-01 Air Force SERE.. I also attended all of the Air Force Survival Schools , Arctic, Tropic, Desert, and Jungle. I attended the Army Special Forces SERE School. I have taught SERE in Washington State, Florida, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Jordan. This is a complete well thought out book, that thinks with you as you read.. He anticipates your questions and answers the "experts advice" that he sees as incomplete or in error.. There is no one way to Survive at a Grid Down scenario. Each of you will have to tailor your resources with your belief systems. It will be the most difficult thing you will ever have to do.. This book is a great resource. It clearly defines the threat. It lists resources that you may have or that you can obtain. It constantly reminds you that Wal Mart will be closed and those things you need you will either have or will improvise or go without. When it happens, what do I do? Where do I go? What do I need to live with my family and those in my group? Are groups even a good idea? Can we pool our resources and survive? How much food do I need? Should I buy food storage? It is thought provoking and will have you purchasing more books, and guides.. My experiences in East Africa in the early 80's gave me a harsh look at civil war. You have no idea what starving people will do and how hard it is to say "NO". This book is a must for each library, and is a good read for wives and children. Read it with your family and discuss the options for your family..Now the question for you is; "Can I do what I think I can do"?Ron LongUSAF SERE Class 72-01

The author is a former SERE instructor, and obviously knows his stuff. This book is based on the author's view that a EMP event, similar to the fictional event portrayed in William Forstchen's best seller "One Second After" and discussed at length in Ted Kopple's non-fiction book "Lights Out," as the most likely SHTF scenario that could bring about massive and disruptive change to our personal and national lives if it should ever happen. What Mssrs. Forstchen's book and Kopple's book were short on were specifics, like how to prepare for a possible EMP event happening. What gear do you need, what skills should you practice, where should you go, etc. They did a good job of realistically explaining what an EMP could do, but they pretty much left it at that. Hollerman's book fills the gap nicely, and he gets very, very specific. He doesn't claim to have all the answers, or even that his views will apply to most people, but he doesn't shy away from sticking his own neck out and stating his personal opinions which I like and respect. For instance, he bluntly says that his choice for personal sidearm in a grid down scenario would be a Glock. Period. No waffling. Now, I'm an HK fanboy (HK45C to be specific), it's just the platform I'm comfortable with. But I like the fact that he states his preference, and why he chooses it, and why you probably should as well. He encourages people to think about their own circumstances and apply this book as appropriate to their own lives without totally reinventing the wheel. One thing I wish the author or publisher had taken the time to include would be an index, thus I took away one star. Any guide or manual with this much extensive information really needs a searchable index. Maybe in a future edition? Also, future editions would benefit from chapter summaries as well, so that people can quickly access or remember key points since the writing is so dense with information. This doesn't take away from the quality of the book, or the information, but it would make it much more handy. Otherwise you're pretty much stuck with highlighting the crap out of the book (which I'm doing) and sticking little tabs on the pages. Otherwise a solid choice for people looking to be prepared... for whatever happens.

I have read so many of these preparedness books (including many highly rated ones) that were a complete waste of my time, I couldn’t even tell you. I’m sure many of you have too. 99% of these genre of books are spitting out the same regurgitated information over and over again. It’s an embarrassment. They might as well just copy and paste each other’s pages to each other (maybe they do).Jonathan Hollerman’s book Survival Theory is a breath of fresh air, among a field of mostly arm-chair commandos. You can tell from reading him, that he is the real deal. He doesn’t just talk about it. He didn’t just read about it from other “preppers”. He studies it, does it and has experienced it (well, much of it anyway...hopefully we’ll never find out). This is finally a survival book worth highlighting! The greatest part about him, is he uses real common sense to understand or theorize events or outcomes...along with a ton of study behind it. So many books, blogs, and comments I’ve read...amazingly, don’t. He has done his research, and it shows. I’ve been through multiple hurricanes. I’m CERT certified (twice). I hold 5 FEMA IS certificates. I’ve been activated at our EOC during Hurricane Irma, working alongside Fire, EMS, Police, EM and city officials. I’ve been without power for days. I’ve experienced and have been trained a little bit.Here’s an example of what many don’t realize and you won’t hear it mentioned in most other books (except Jonathan’s). If you are connected to city sewer (a whole-lot of us are) and the power is out city-wide...those pumps that keep that sewage moving and processing at the wastewater plant, aren’t working. The sewage starts building up in the pipes (because people are still flushing with pool water, lake water...whatever they can) and eventually after pipes clogs enough, it starts backing up into properties and homes. I have seen this happen to people during Irma in as little as a week due to compounding issues. Sections of town were not able to use their toilets and had to go to other areas to do their business. So, the books out there saying everything will be fine when the grid goes down in surburbia, as long as you’ve stockpiled enough food, made friends with your neighbors, lay low, have enough ammo for unruly people, and hunker down in your home...are clueless. They don’t understand the big picture. They haven’t truly researched all angles of these scenarios. Sewage backing up into your property WILL make your home uninhabitable. Then what?Overall, Jonathan’s book does paint quite a bleak picture because he’s mainly talking about the worst case scenario...grid down. I applaud him for taking on such an immense and complicated subject. It is not easy, and most “authors” just merely skim through it. He does not. Is it a realistic thing for Mr. and Mrs. Jones to worry about? Worry every day? No. Be somewhat mentally and physically prepared for? Absolutely yes. There is information out there, if you’re willing to hear it, about how the US has malware implanted into other countries to be able to shut their grid down, if they “needed to”. There are countries that also have malware implanted in the US, with those same capabilities, for if and when they “need to”. This particular country has already proven their capabilities by cyber-attacking multiple US large banks (like Wells Fargo) to “test” the waters not too long ago. Is a grid attack on us likely to occur? I sure hope not. But...it is certainly possible and they are quite capable.Thank you Jonathan! One of the sad things about re-publishing a book (first by Sheed Ward in 1960, now by Sophia Institute in 2017) is that the product, for all practical purposes, appears to be very recent. It is an older perspective of Christ's Passion and Death. Simply put, there is much more known today about this subject matter, so I would suggest that since the new publisher does not make that clear on the cover (it is only when you open to the first few pages and see the Imprimatur was granted in 1959) that this is a bit deceptive. It's sad to pay money for material that, which never is truly outdated, it can be updated - as one disappointed customer describes about the information revealed very recently about the Shroud of Turin. I find myself noting facts that I have read from other more recent biblical exegeses of the Holy Bible by popular Catholic authors that present a much more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Much more is known today archaeologically than in 1959. That's 59 years ago! I don't know that I would buy it again, but I will finish it since I paid for it.

I initially bought this book with the intention of nursing it as my Lenten read. The book was so engaging, I found myself staying up hours after my normal sleep time just to read "one more chapter." The book is filled with deep insights that remain true to the gospel without pandering to sentimentality. It presents a stark glimpse into the electric charged political atmosphere of Jerusalem at the time. It also presents a touching glimpse into Jesus' last hours. When the tomb is sealed at the books end, I found myself longing for the Resurrection, the true purpose of The Passion. The book truly drew me closer to the sacrifice our Lord and Saviour endured for our sins.It is an absolute must read.

This book is as good as any book have read on this subject. I was continually amazed at the new ideas and historical way the book dealt with this most significant event. I found myself saying to people, “Did you know that....” about several passages from the book. I have placed many markers in the book for later reference. The book is not only about the time period but traces ideas back to the Old Testament as well as relating their importance to us today. It deals with the people and groups involved and what they were thinking and how that prompted their actions. It also discusses the place of and the how of this awful act against the Lord.The writing style is concise and easily understood. It is a great introduction or is viable for someone who has extensive experience with the topic. I recommend this book highly!

I bought two children's books on South Africa this month and both were great! I pre-ordered this one got it on its released date, which is always awesome. "Living in...South Africa" is great for teaching early learners about the people and history of South Africa. It's pretty informative, but not so much that it would go over a child's head. It reads more like a teaching tool than a bedtime story, but that's great for families who travel a lot or for parents who just want to teach their children about another country and culture. The other title, which I'd also recommend, is about a little girl named Keesha and her two moms who go on a 7-day South African Adventure. Both of these books would make excellent additions to any library. Recommended!

This is the best instructional book I've read! Author Michael Miller takes a reader clearly and patiently through each step, never assuming anything, with illustrations for each step. He doesn't talk down to supposed "tech-limited" seniors on their way to dementia. Perk: the slightly larger print is a godsend.This is a book for anyone, young or older, who wants to quickly know how to use their IPad with the latest IOS 11.00. Mr. Miller covers everything. After trying to add email accounts, I hit a glitch, turned to Mr. Miller's book and YES, he had covered the problem. I quickly solved it down to his clear, uncomplicated directions. A GREAT BOOK!

As a volunteer, I provide free, iPhone/iPad training classes at a nearby senior, independent, residence facility. I have not only used this book as a reference for my class preparations, but it is one that I have recommended to attendees who wish to learn on their own or simply have available for reference. I bought this book in hopes of making the transition from Microsoft Windows experience to Apple I-pad experience. It has helped in some ways, but let me down big-time when it came to specific questions. For example, not a word about printing from my I-pad. It leaves out the crucial information about how to transform an Apple "page" product to being readable in Word (finally found out via Siri). In setting up my email, using a server that is not already configured on it, it said not a word about the &*()%^% screen that popped up asking me about my outgoing and incoming server information. There seem to be crucial holes in the information needed. This book may serve people who are simply completely new to computers, rather than those transitioning from Windows to Apple, but I wish I had known that before I spent my money. Sign me Frustrated.

While the authors’ attempt to introduce “best practices” in India is commendable, the ideas are impractical if not impossible in the US health care system. Some of the ideas are downright scary – “reuse of single purpose surgical supplies.” It’s difficult to pinpoint all the differences between India and US in a complex topic as health care, but two immediate factors come to mind. First, there are entrenched reasons for the cost differences between the US and the rest of the world. For one, the US has an extremely litigious penchant towards health care providers, and a daunting level of checks and balances such as FDA clearance (and inspections) over pharmaceuticals and medical devices. One reason why the $1 voice prosthesis in India costs $700 in the US. Related to this, the US is one of the few markets where medical procedures and medication charges are not capped by the government; most nations even the most democratic and developed ones run health care as a utility. As a result, the US being a high-margin market subsidizes the high cost to develop “innovations” for the rest of the world. Second, the US medical networks have the “hub-and-spoke” model the authors recommend – it’s just isolated within a network. To gain the scale efficiencies in the book, individual networks would need to build a consortium to pool resources. Even if the networks are willing to work together, the efficiencies will still be difficult to gain based on the demographic and geographic profile of the US. Yes, the authors present us with 4 working cases in the Americas, but these institutions serve outliers of the general US population (e.g., Cayman Islands), and cannot be a foundation for the current health care needs of Americans. “Reverse innovation” may be a great concept in commodity industries, but for US health care, this book should be stored at the unreachable, top of the bookshelf [of ambulance chasing attorneys].

Many have tried to address the skyrocketing costs of American healthcare. Many have written about the astonishing results by hospitals in India such as Narayana Hrudalaya in Bangalore and Aravind EyeCare in Chennai. But Govindarajann and Ramamurti draw a straight line from one to the other and suggest some radical solutions for American healthcare from unexpected places. They back their hypothesis with real world American examples such as Ascension, the largest Catholic hospital system in the world, Iora Health serving Boston, Nevada and New York and the U Miss hospital center deep in the American south. They highlight key issues of cost, access, quality and how these innovators have tackled these challenges. Other challenges in American health care such as healthcare disparities between social and ethnic groups are largely unaddressed , perhaps because these challenges also persist in India. I visited one of these hospitals during my executive MBA at Oxford university and found there care models quite impressive. The book is well researched and I commend the authors for a job well done. I recommend the book to CFOs, physician executives and administrators.

Life changing information if you are ready for it. Was life changing for me--changed several core beliefs of mine as it sank in over a few years.

I've been recommending his books to everyone. If you have wonder what happens after we die, the actual accounts of his clients will tell you all. I'm more at spiritual peace since I read both books. We all come with a plan... not everything is black or white, for the most part is grey...Terrible circumstances we encounter or do might be because we had previously agreed to do them, we are helping someone (another soul) or we might have just decided to do them just because (free will). We have all been told that we come here to be happy, but not true, we come here to experience things we cannot experience in heaven. So yeah, some people have "chosen" to suffer and not get out of the hole cos that's what they came here to experience. The important thing is to learn the lesson quickly, move on and be happy until our next assignment :)...and there's no hell nor the Devil, only the one you create for yourself with your mind, when you disconnect from God/Source/the Creator.one last note, this book mentions a little more in detail about ghosts, spirits, "evil" spirits, "possessions" and other entities (not E.T.); very interesting indeed.

Both Michael Newtons books Journey of Souls & Destiny of Souls has literally changed my whole world. I 'accidentally' stumbled upon destiny of souls (which I read 1st, not knowing that journey of souls was his first one) one night meaning to google some phrase I heard on the Long Island Medium. I ended up clicking on this book for some reason, and was instantly so incredibly intrigued. This book in particular really stood out to me, after have reading this & journey of souls I can honestly say that i refer to these books in my mind once a day. I was raised Christian, but as I've gotten a little older I've always wondered- how can there be all these religions & they each have there own specific individual "rules" so to speak yet they all claim that their religion is the path to god, and THAT one religion is going to get them into heaven. I just couldn't picture dying, waiting in line to see if you were allowed access past those pearly gates and then god announces real quick "ALRIGHT GUYS, WE'RE ABOUT TO START ADMISSIONS INTO HEAVEN.. BUT GUESS WHOS THE LUCKY WINNER?? CATHOLICS! The rest y'all exit to your right, and Satan will take ya on down" so I've always kind of had this thought process that each religion has a way of coming full circle, and that being-- having faith in whoever, or whatever allows you to feel a certain way. Maybe its love, comfort, guidance, or gives you hope.. but my point is, this book did indeed make me feel validated on my thought process and the way I see/ view my god. Love this book, and will forever hold on & re read.

I've always believed in God, although my opinion on what God is has evolved over the years. I grew up thinking that He was an old man with a white beard. As I grew older this just didn't make sense to me and I have been on a quest for The Truth for the past 10+ years. While this book isn't about what God is, it definitely goes a long ways to explaining what God isn't, and it definitely proves that there is a God or at the very least an after life. I absolutely love this book. Before finishing it I had to go on line and find somebody who knows Dr. Newtons teachings so I could go through the process myself. I'm not so interested in who I was in my past lives, although that will be fascinating to find out. I'm more interested in what Dr. Newton describes as the life between life. Basically he gives great detail as to what exactly happens to our soul when we lose our physical body. The book gives great detail as to why we are here and how we chose to incarnate over and over again to learn lessons. This book has given me a new peace of mind regarding why things happen to us that seem unfair. I definitely look at life a lot differently now that I have read this book. The book has helped me to not take anything personal. Everything in life is for my own good and I have chose for these things to happen so that I can learn from them.

Lots and lots of information and case studies about what to expect on the Other Side and why. It's written well, although I had to take breathers. He's always presenting new information, but it can seem a little repetitive since it's all about love and learning on the Other Side.I'm thrilled to know there is an Other Side, but sometimes it sure sounds like everyone there is on drugs the way they're thrilled and joyful to be working most of the time, going to school, attending lectures on the importance of compassion, etc., passing the Cup of Sorrows, playing games like Tag. From all the near death books I've read, I understand the joy and peace and love there is indescribable. I guess any author trying to describe the details of life on the Other Side for hundreds of pages is going to risk rendering it almost too ordinary rather than extraordinary. Sometimes it sounds complex and filled with hierarchies that aren't really hierarchies because no one minds being at the levels they are at, even if they are lower down, because they're so darn happy. Who cares if you're feeling groovy!But I love that he's written this book. I love the regressions and the values shown to be important. I love the lessons people learn from their reincarnations. And I love that Earth is considered a very difficult and strenuous school, and the souls that choose to incarnate here return to the Other Side more insightful and strong as a result. Go earthlings!!!

Sometimes reading a travel book can be an exhilarating experience; it doesn't happen very often but when it does it can make your day. I have read many books of this genre in the past, since I've been a traveler for more than twenty-five years now, but none gave me such pleasure as Martin Li's "Inca Trails".What I mostly liked about this book is the fact that it's not a travel guide, but rather a travelogue. The author set out on a journey across Bolivia and Peru to retrace the ancient paths of the Incas, and during it he came to meet a lot of interesting characters, adopt a mule called Coco, taste the local cuisine, spent the nights out in the open or in dreadful lodges, and find his way across the land on packed-up buses.Li does not, at any point, try to impress the reader, and he doesn't seem to care if the people think that he's brave or a coward; all he cares about is the journey, the stories he learns, and the new memories that form in his head day in day out. The people he meets, we meet as well, as he describes every character that has an important role to play in the narration in detail; the landscapes that capture his gaze, also capture ours, through his words and pictures. His journey is far from easy, but the way he describes it makes it sound so.If I were a TV producer I'd use this book to film a series of documentaries that talk about the lands the author visited and the people he encountered, and I'd have someone narrate the history lessons he delivers as well, since this is one of those special books that can offer learning, adventure and bits and pieces of fun at the same time. I'd highly recommend it to everyone who's not only interested in traveling, but also history and ancient civilizations.

I picked up this book since in a few weeks i'll be doing the Inca Trail and I thought it may help me to get another point of view about Andean Culture.The author's account of his travels thru Bolivia and Peru is interesting and on several parts describes monuments and ruins that he encounters along the way as well as little bits of information regarding the people he comes across.However, soon his account becomes a little tiresome because he is victim of his own words and experiences.In other words, the author spends way too many words describing mountains,rivers and plants instead of focusing on Inca culture and its importance.The book is basically the author's own adventures in the Andes and he seems more interested in enjoying and telling it to us like a family who shows their Hawaiian vacation thru polaroids:Its nice but it doesn't have any substance for the people watching the polaroids.Had he integrated more information about the Incas,their way of life and the significance for us today it might have been a different book but I guess that wasn't the authors intention.

I really liked this book - the author's writing seems genuine and sincere, not to mention it is not pretentious and ego-boosting like some memoirs tend to be. It might be also useful source of information for wanna-be trekkers and travelers through Andes.I just didn't like the chapter about history of Incas, because it simply doesn't fit to the whole narrative. It sounds like a summary of books I've already read about it, like John Hemming's The Conquest of the Incas. The writer himself gave at the end of the book due credit to that scientist among others as the source of his knowledge, so it is not the complaint in the authorship's sense, but for the style of the book. However, for those who do not know much about the subject, that chapter may come in handy.

Hope, because I love to travel, and reading about where others have gone allows me to find new destinations and relive the feelings inspired by my own journeys. Good travel writing makes you feel like you are actually there alongside the author, taking each step, and experiencing the sights, sounds, and smells of the landscape right along with him. But apprehension comes from the fact that most great travelers are simply not great writers, and often you feel left behind, tangled in unwieldy prose.Inca Trails suffers from no such shortcomings, and is a delight to read. Far more than just travel writing, author Martin Li skillfully weaves the fascinating story of the Inca people in modern day Bolivia and Peru with charming and witty accounts of his own travels through the region. The prose is clear and thoughtful, and successfully brings the reader along each step of the way, from La Paz, Bolivia, tracing an historic and enchanting path through the Andes Mountains. He alternates between stories from his own journey and recounting the tumultuous history of the Incas who dealt there so many years before, yet whose presence comes alive in the culture and landscape of the area. About the Author

David Smith has been teaching introductory computer science classes for engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology since 1997 when he retired from industry. Previously, he worked 31 years for Lockheed-Martin at their Marietta, Georgia, facility as a systems and software specialist with a focus on intelligent systems.  He was active in designing and developing software for the C-130J, C-27J, F-22 and C-5 aircraft, and was the technical leader of the Pilot’s Associate program, a $42 million research project sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency. He has a bachelor’s degree in aeronautical engineering from Southampton University, and a master’s degree in control systems from Imperial College, London.

I didn't really delve into the book very deeply as the class instructor didn't include much material that was covered by the content. It looked like a reasonably well laid out book however.

Started out using the MATLAB software with this book and I'd have to say that in combination with the book and my professor, the content is still a little too hard to understand if you don't have any previous programming background.

Amazing quality, like new except for one barely dogeared corner otherwise pages and cover are clean and pristine.

If you are new to matlab, hope u have a good teacher. This book sux and does not explain like it should

This book is written in JARGONS. If you are new to MATLAB, this book will NOT help you understand it. YouTube will do a better job and you will save you some bucks. I am in CS 1371 where neither the teacher nor this book helps FML.
