I hope this -- now labelled "young adult" -- version hasn't been watered down from the 1999 edition. I read mine again every year or so -- it's that interesting and that deeply detailed, and the pictures are wonderful. The adaptations of bees to their environments -- or perhaps the ability of bees to construct their larvae's environments by drilling, cutting, and complex building techniques-- were a revelation to me 10 years ago and still are.It's a sad commentary on the publisher that, as an eagle-eyed reviewer detected, the cover picture certainly does seem to feature a fly -- a bee-imitating fly but a fly nonetheless. Perhaps this is why clicking on the cover to "look inside" (and try to get a better look at the cover insect) brings up the wonderful picture from the older edition rather than that from the new -- a cluster of bees (a 'lek') putting themselves to be on the disk of a sunflower. Just one of the fascinating aspects of bee behaviour the book tells about.A great companion to Gary Nabhan and Stephen Buchmann's "Forgotten Pollinators" and a must pair for plant lovers who ask "what's happening" while watching wild and garden plants.

I like this book a fair amount. It's an overview of the bees of the world, with good no nonsense information about miners, masons, carpenters, and so on as well as the more social bees. I especially loved their effective use of diagrams for the shapes of various bees' nests.The thing I didn't like was their intrusive and oftentimes nonsensical (and certainly slavish) adherence to the nonsensical notion that the natural world is based on strict competition. They bend over backwards to try to show that the activities of all bees are based on competition, and they strain to use crazy metaphors to support this view. Instead of perceiving bees and flowers as a wonderful example of the way that different members of natural communities work together for the benefit of the larger community, they actually resort to citing Adam Smith and The Wealth of Nations as bee/plant interactions being a form of selfish capitalism!!![.] It's nonsense.One other problem, and this is one reason I hate science. I'll just give a quote. Speaking of a bee being driven to extinction by logging, they say, "Recent reports of forestry activities on Bacan give rise to concern that the bee might become extinct before yielding up the secrets of its biology." If the authors weren't "free market scientists" they would be ashamed of this statement. It implies: Who cares if the creature goes extinct for its own sake? We just need to mine the knowledge before it does.Once again, all this said, the book does provide some good information.

The lovely close-up photograph on the cover is of a fly, Nuff said.

This is a truely excellent book, especially for entomologists who should have an interest in bees. The only problem I have is that the picture on the cover is actually of a fly.

This is one book I just couldn't put down. It contains some of the major scandals that hit Hollywood throughout the century. If I didn't have a job, I would had read it in one or two days. If you love gossip, scandals, Hollywood, or history this is a must read.

I love to learn anything I can about celebrities and this is one of those books that I learn quite a bit about old Hollywood; I can't wait to buy all the other books this author has! If you like Hollywood gossip whether old or new, then I recommend this author!

I was very disappointed with this book. There is more hype on the cover than on the inside. There are no details whatsoever. Just a general time- line of there careers. There is just a tiny bit of information on a lot of stars. Most of it is widely known.

How Graham Norton finds the time to write novels is beyond me, given his broadcasting commitments alone, as like any public figure of his stature , heust have numerous other demands to his time. Initially I found the disruption of switching from Now and Then irritating simply because one has to readjust. But once into the structure and flow, it ceases to be an issue because of the relationship to the story. One has to suspect that Elizabeth's story, whilst fiction, may have deep roots of fact from the difficult and traumatic recent past of Ireland's social history. Everyone has their place here, but it is ultimately the misguided ideas of Edward's mother that stands out. Even though she is hardly a character to like, Graham Norton portrays her horrific behaviour brilliantly. For such a naturally clever and witty person, to write a book such as this, which hasn't a funny sentence in it, Graham Norton can deservedly add to his accomplishments, author.

I suspect like most people I know of Graham Norton in his role as TV talk show host. A witty, charming guy who plays the role of being a little dim. Judging by his skill and ability to tell a story this is a long way from the truth. Graham Norton can legitimately call himself a very good author. This is a wonderfully written mystery and a book well worth reading. Congratulations

Norton tells this story so well, that I couldn't wait to get back to it each day. Set in Ireland, it relates a backstory and a present day narrative with adept and extraordinary skill. The characters are not stereotypes. That means a lot to me as a reader. I have watched The Graham Norton Show for several years on B.B.C. America. I always look forward to it, and now I look forward to his novels with equal anticipation.

Came upon this book by accident, I had no idea that Graham Norton was a writer and i am blown away by his talent for storytelling. Brilliant book start to finish a real page turner. Looking forward to many more brilliant stories.

A Keeper was the kind of book I couldn't wait to get back to. I read it over 3 or 4 days, and loved it. The Irish setting, (which wasn't overdone) the sub-plot of the son and his father, the ending, and the narrative all spoke to me like a good book should. I have always been a fan of Mr. Norton's TV shows, but had no idea he could write a good story. A nice easy read without the fluff.

This is a transportative moving book. The writing is so descriptive I could see every scene so clearly. If they make this book into a movie there's an Oscar there for anyone who can convey Edward as beautifully as he is written.

Really great read with some heart stopping moments that won't let you put this book down!

Recommended for anyoneWho enjoys intrigue, Witt and the perfect mix of humour and sadness and of course anyone who has ever lived or visited rural ireland or especially west cork.

A very fast and fun read on two of the most used substances in human beverage/food creation on earth. I will give the book 3.5 stars, actually, and if it weren't "dated" it's scientific back-bone, or, were longer, (it's about 100-200 pages too short) then I would have given it 4.5 or 5 stars. The work is written in a fun style that moves quickly and covers both the science and the history of both caffeine and alcohol. The author also does a great job of tackling the myths behind the uses and effects of both. That's what makes it an interesting read, even above the core chemistry and biology (internal, cardio, and neurology) and he applies truths/facts well with no real apparent agenda in any direction.If you love science and history and lore, this is an enjoyable read. If you want depth, or a comprehensive treatment of the effects of caffeine and/or alcohol, this isn't for you. Sadly, he also leaves out the psychological and sociological issues involved in these topics.I had decided to read this because of a recommendation in an article in the Atlantic, and I am glad I did, but also a little disappointed that I bought a used copy instead of grabbing a library edition.

If you drink coffee, tea, wine, or anything else with Coffee or Alcohol in it, this book is a must read.The author doesn't take a stance for or against either drug. This book breaks down the biological and chemical reactions that allow caffeine and alcohol to affect us. It explains everything in a very detailed manner (describing molecule shape affects it's role in the body, how alcohol's depressant affects work a similar mechanism to valiums, etc), and then goes a step further to give a simple break down of the explanation. It is really fascinating how complex the human body and it's interaction with these substances are.Overall, this book is for the type of person with an interest in the science behind these substances, but doesn't have the time/patience to read oodles of medical texts.

This is a good introduction to how these two chemicals work in your body and I learned a few new tricks as well. Written simply enough for most non-biochemists to get the idea. The tips on how to get a better buzz with less alcohol and why smoking reduces caffeine uptake were especially interesting. If you drink either, even casually, it would be worth the read.

Fun read. I agree with some of the other comments that the author gets a little too technical at times, but the book is so well written and so fascinating that I easily slowed down to absorb the extra facts. And, I enjoyed learning more about these two common drinks.

This book is enlightening on what's actually happening when you drink coffee or alcohol. I didn't lose interest despite the chemistry. I wish that more information would have been given more scientific methods of controlling one's intake of these substances.

This book is good in that it explains the science of both substances in a way a layperson can understand but it just isn't that interesting if you've read other books on the subjects. I do like that the author does not draw unsubstantiated conclusions and explains shortcomings (if there are any) with existing studies.
