I have had difficulty reading philosophy in the past, felt it a chore, and did not enjoy it. And I didn't study much philosophy in college since the requirements had been abolished. Nevertheless, I was totally engrossed by this book. It was another of those books that I could not put down. I read through the text of Consolation (173 pages) and though the six chapters of "Contemporary Criticism" (89 pages). I read the footnotes to the text, some of which took up a third of a page. There is something very engaging and appealing about truth and beauty.The book in essence answers the question of what makes life worth living (with a nod to Bishop Sheen). The answer is that the Good brings life and joy and and the Good is God. A note to the text says, "Lady Philosophy will show that men try to seek after particular attributes of the Good rather than after the Good itself" (no. 16, p. 69). Boethius unfolds the meaning of this, writing to console himself after his arrest and awaiting his execution (which proved to be beastly).This translation and notes rendered the text (a translation from Latin) into easily understandable and readable language. The six chapters of "contemporary criticism" further discussed some of the difficult discussions and arguments made in Consolation. Both the footnotes and the critical essays at the end were of top scholarship. I was pleasantly surprised to see the quality of research on this edition.The philosophical (as opposed to biblical) presentation in Consolation made it clear to me how and why philosophy as presented by Boethius can be consoling in face of life's challenges. So many of us look for consolation in the wrong places, in the "numerous errors" which lead us from the Good rather than in the "true Good." (The fact that the argument is philosophical rather than biblical may make Consolation more appealing to those who are skeptical of or uninterested in biblical texts.)Members of our Catholic parish book club recently read and discussed this book (some using a different edition) and generally appreciated the book and discussion. Most of us hadn't heard of Boethius or of the book before and were glad we came across it and used it for the book club.As for myself, I felt consoled by this book and am glad I read it.

This sets a high standard for classics aimed at students or average readers--Ignatius has done a splendid job here. I read The Consolation of Philosophy many years ago and got very little from it; this edition (and perhaps a few years of life!) helped me gain some insight into a seminal work of Western Civilization. First, the price is very reasonable; second, the translation is fresh and understandable without being dumbed-down; third, there are numerous footnotes for the reader inclined to read them (I read some, but certainly nowhere near all of them); fourth, the essays by good scholars help the reader gain some context and further understanding, so that reading both text and essays is the equivalent of a mini-course on this book and author. As a former English major, I was shocked to see how pervasive was/is the influence of Boethius on so many irreplaceable authors: Dante, Chaucer, and Shakespeare, to name just three. This book now has me wanting to check out others in the Ignatius Critical Edition series. I recommend this volume for college students, adults who want to broaden their knowledge, and high school students, especially homeschoolers.

Everything was fine on my Kindle version until I had to vomit from stupid crap like this:"Today’s world is under attack by a different type of barbarian, highly educated ones: relativists who think that the only truth is that which can be proved by the physical sciences. As a result, our modern world seems ever more intent to push science to the limit, testing boundaries of morality and ethics. Indeed, practical science has become exalted as the supreme exercise of the intellect, used to master nature and gain power, with little concern for moral obligation. Materialism and consumerism are results of this disregard of core values based on natural law, as humans strive to fulfill their inner emptiness with the false gods, the falsa bona about which Boethius warned. The timeless truth of Western tradition, which exalts the dignity of every human person, is in greater danger of being lost today than it was over fifteen hundred years ago when the Goths sacked Rome. The new barbarian is far more dangerous. These barbarians have neither belief in natural law nor morality and are practitioners of a different and more subtle kind of sacking. We are in desperate need of a corrective. For Boethius, philosophy was the love of wisdom based on the knowable reality of truth.28 He taught that this kind of wisdom is a living word which illuminates the mind of man. Therefore, the possession of true knowledge (as opposed to so-called scientific fact) leads to the highest Good, the summum bonum, which cannot be taken away and does not disappear if one is imprisoned. This Truth which is real and knowable needs to be proclaimed again to our world, which is tumbling into darkness." -Ignatius Critical Editions------------Pass. Ain't getting my money. Trying the Slavitt translation next, hopefully free of political trash.

Not much to say about this seminal bridge between the ancient world of Greece, the classical world of Rome, and the Middle Ages, that has not been said most eloquently before. Let it be noted that if Boethius was good enough for Chaucer and Dante among others, he should at least pique your interest for historical reasons if not for the literary ones. Daunted by the work, a reader might just want to read the poems first before attempting the entire work. Trust, it is fun.About the Ignatius Critical Editions, they too deserve five stars and while I was first introduced to Boethius almost forty years ago by the Penguin Press and it is still valid today, forty years of scholarship have occurred and Ignatius does an admirable job with notes, introduction and bibliography. So all that need to be done is to begin to see what all the fuss was about and why he should be back on the best seller list.
